      Jon:

Right. My bad. Got confused by all those zeros.

P.S. The Yellowstone basin is a prime candidate for a long-overdue eruption.

is the "power" still measured compared to tons of tnt?

I would guess that those 18000 pounds are more "effective" than plain tnt - the actual number should be higher.

[edit] ignore that. according to cnn, they are using tritonal, which is (usually) a 80/20 mixture of tnt & aluminium. less powerful, more stable

[edit2] less powerful might be wrong, but it doesn't seem to make a big difference.

it's cruel to speak about weapons like that.

Don't worry about "Weapons of Mass Destruction", the world is covered with natural explosives (Resurgent Calderas) that are more than capable of causing rather serious problems.
I agree. Just think if this had of happened near a major metro area.

Magma began intruding into the Mount St. Helens edifice in the late winter and early spring of 1980. By May 18, the cryptodome (bulge) on the north flank had likely reached the point of instability, and was creeping more rapidly toward failure.

Check again. This isn't a WMD. It's just a bomb. No viruses, no bacteria, no radiation. It's a pretty big boom, but regular old carpet bombing is much more destructive. This is just about the right size to take out an airfield, or an armored division, and we've added smoke and mirrors to scare the sh*t out of the survivors.

drop one of those on a city, and you would get MASS destruction...therefore it is a weapon of mass destruction.

While it may necessary to develop these weapons for some reason, I would not call the development of any large scale weapon a GOOD thing.

Creepy, anyone else notice it had a copy of Dianetics strapped onto the back of it? The most insideous part of that bomb is that it trys to convert the targets to Scientology (tm).

Mount Saint Helens was a joke compared to what will happen when Yellowstone erupts. The last time a supervolcano erupted was 74,000 years ago when Toba on Sumatra blew 2800 cubic kilometers of material into the atmosphere. The nuclear winter that followed killed off huge amounts of the ecosystem. Human population dropped to about 5000-10,000 worldwide. The difference in volume between something like Mt. St. Helens and something like Toba or Yellowstone is the same as the difference in volume between an average 4000 square foot single family home (including attic) and the Louisiana Superdome.. or the difference between the volume of a 36" television and that same 4000 square foot home. I think anyone in the US West of the Mississippi can pretty much kiss his ass goodbye.

Beneath America's Yellowstone National Park lies a volcano so colossal that, if it erupts, could threaten the human race with extinction.

BTW, the term "Supervolcano" is really cheesy. You're very likely to anger the volcano gods unless you treat them with the proper respect, starting by going to the Yellowstone Volcanic Observatory, the Long Valley Observatory, and the USGS's generic volcano page.

Then remember that it's quite possible to trip over your own feet and break your neck, and that there are plenty of other things that are more likely to kill you.

BuddMan, you don't "know," ok? There are earthquakes in that area all the time, and the ground has swollen about a meter in height over the past 50 years. Famous last words.. don't curse us all with them..
