Tell us which forum you plan to use. There are externally hosted ones which require nothing, and there are forums like this one which dan knows way more about than I do, but it looks like it needs at least PHP.

this 1) needs money, 2) php (version 3 or 4, but 4.2.x + is better) and MySQL.

Some of the GPL boards will use flat files, however if we're talking a lot of users, forget it.

Problem is ASP generally costs more, as it's usually on an IIS server (yes I know about the linux varients). That said, MS-SQL costs a lot, and well MYSQL is free, so the host passes the respective costs onto the user.

Can you convert the site to php?

p.s. @Az - yup know may more about this one then at times I want to

My recomendation for a forum is phpBB 2.0.4, this requires PHP 4.x and MySQL support. I'm sure there must be some ASP based forums but I've never seen one

I think the best solution might be an externally hosted and administered forum, especially if you're not too familiar with scripting, databases, etc.

This might even be cheaper than a (virtual) dedicated server you might need for running your own database (though maybe the bigger web packs come with support for this as well, though usually more or less limited in terms of memory, CPU-time etc., which might severely limit the performance of your forum).
