    This is getting scary!

not good.. too close to home

    Thousands ordered quarantined in GTA
Everyone who visited infected east-end hospital at risk, official says

Canadians in the thousands have been asked to "quarantine themselves," wearing masks and in some cases staying home over fears a deadly SARS outbreak contained to the Toronto-area would spread even further.
Toronto's Medical Officer of Health said everyone who visited the east-end Scarborough Grace Hospital since March 16 should remain in their homes for 10 days since that visit.

Their family members may go to work or school, but must wear a mask when at home and in contact with those who are at risk of infection.

"We realize this is a substantial amount of people, we're talking about over a thousand we expect, this number will be in the thousands," said Dr. Sheela Basrur.

"This is an incident of unprecedented scope and magnitude."

The comments came as protective facemasks flew off supply store shelves Wednesday as anxious Torontonians sought to shield themselves against a deadly SARS outbreak that prompted Ontario to declare a "health emergency."

Police wearing surgical facemasks descended on the hospital where two people died of the pneumonia-like disease, stretching yellow police tape around the perimeter and blocking the entrances with their cruisers, Citytv reported Wednesday.

Ontario's Public Security Commissioner said police were providing protection for a helicopter about to land at Scarborough Grace Hospital carrying an infectious disease expert. The hospital has no landing pad, forcing the helicopter to land on the grounds of the hospital.

"The police presence is simply to allow that to happen and ensure public safety by cordoning off the area," said Dr. James Young.

News of the extended quarantine came hours after Health Minister Tony Clement announced he had declared a "health emergency" in Ontario. By using the province's emergency powers legislation, Clement was able to activate an action group to try to stop the spread of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Dozens of households have already been quarantined and Scarborough's emergency room was closed earlier this week. A second Toronto hospital, Mount Sinai, stopped accepting new emergency patients on Wednesday. A Toronto elementary school has been closed since Monday.

"We're taking this very seriously," Clement said.

"By characterizing it as a health emergency, we are giving ourselves the powers that we need and the information that we need at the most appropriate time to ensure that we can contain this disease as soon as possible."

A command centre will be set up and staffed 24 hours a day to co-ordinate all information from hospitals and health workers

Hey it's hitting here in OTTAWA now.
A 59 yr old man is in Hospital with the same symtoms and they have quarantined his area in the hospital. Also people are keeping their kids home from school as they heard about a little girl (from grade 2) who got back from vacation in Vietnam.
      WOW

Belleville sounds relatively safe for now...At least your roommate does not go to Scarborough all the time to visit his parents like mine |.. Scary!

Scarborough is pretty big, low chance of him getting infected, me thinks. But still...

MAN! I am living in Thornhill, Greater Toronto. It's a good thing that the government is putting a lot of resources on stoping the virus from spreading.

Most of my close relatives live in Hong Kong. One of my relative there lives very close to a building that was found to have 7 families inflated with the disease. Everybody in Hong Kong are wearing masks etc. To make the matter worse, the chairman of "hong kong hospital management" also got the disease. Now i think there are ~40 people killed in Hong Kong becaue of this disease. It's a disaster: the "effective" masks are in very short supply, and I heard they cost like 20 dollars canadian each right now. So my family is shipping the masks to the relatives in HK

IMO Chinese government has very high responsibility for this spreading. It could be handled better. I thought the first SARS case appeared in China like ~5 months ago. A while back before the disease spreding worldwide I was watching Chinese news regarding this issue. The Chinese government was saying that the virus is under control, and nobody has to be worried. They also said the world heath organization do not needed to get involve. Worse thing is they don't even give up information about SARS so reseraches can develop cures for it. I bet they are really scared that the Chinese economy will hit rock bottom once this news get international. Apparenly the government says ~800 died (or 600 i can't remeber). I personally doubt that. A while back I heard Canton (province in China) by itself have like 300 died because of SARS.

As I chinese, I am very angry at how they managed this issue...

well now 1485 cases worldwide (in 15 country) dated march 28th and 53 death recorded as of now. (excluding those on the verge in ICU)
And for those who knows well the pattern of virus spreading this is just the tip of the iceberg. I fear it will be worldwide within a month.

We were due for a major shift in the influenza virus which usually bring worldwide epidemy (like spanish flue at the beginning of the century)
There have been worldwide influenza epidemy every 40 to 60 years as long as we can record it, so we are past due ( the last was in the 30).
The thing is that we were expecting an influenza again (and tought we were ready for it) but it seems that it might be a totally new coronavirus, which is one of the virus causing common cold. Gotta love how nature like to laugh at us....

                      Couldn't agree more.
And it's about time for the WHO to impose a travel ban, something they should've done months ago.

Jeez nothing like panic is there. 1358 cases world wide a very small percentage of the world population.

Considering the following quote from the WHO website about influenza, this SARS outbreak is pretty mild so far.

Although difficult to assess, these annual epidemics are thought to result in between three and five million cases of severe illness and between 250 000 and 500 000 deaths every year around the world.
However, at the rate SARS is spreading, it has potential to get very serious...

There's one thing that I don't really get. Why isn't Vancouver on the list? Besides, there should be more Asian connection at Vancouver than in Toronto.
