I always thought of any cylindrical piece of wood (up to about 1" dia.) as a dowel...

A peg is used to hold the washing on the washing line.

Your pictured jig mentions "dowel pins". Here they are just called "dowels" used to make a dowelled joint.

And you shouldn't confuse them with "towels" which are used to dry yourself after a shower or bath.

Isn't a peg used for hanging clothes as well?

                Oxford dixit:

                dowel // n. & v.
                n. a headless peg of wood, metal, or plastic for holding together components of a structure.
v.tr. (dowelled, dowelling; US doweled, doweling) fasten with a dowel or dowels.
[Middle English from Middle Low German dovel: perhaps related to thole1]

Do we have to guess precisely who the statue is and which building they are on?

I would guess it is a famous University as it looks like he is wearing a mortar-board.

Bingo, KvH. A tiny piece of this photo, taken from the steps of one of the Smithsonian museums, possibly the National Art Gallery, just over a year ago.

                              Your turn...
