  • "I, Robot"

    Isasc Azimov's "I, Robot" is now filming for release in 2004. This is the story where Azimov introduced The Three Laws of Robotics;

1: A robot may not injure a human or, through inaction, allow a human to come to harm.

2: A robot must obey orders given to it by a human, except where it would conflict with the first law.

3: A robot must protect itself, as long as that protection doesn't violate either the first or second law.
    Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: Alex Proyas (The Crow; Dark City)
Writer: Akiva Goldsman (Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind")

    Will Smith: Detective Spooner
    Bridget Moynahan: Dr. Susan Calvin
Alan Tudyk: CGI reference for Sonny, much as Andy Serkis did for Gollum in LOTR: The Two Towers

This one has real potential with Akiva Goldsman doing the writing and Alex Pryoas the directing.

Interesting. Remind me, though - wasn't "I, Robot" either one of the individual Robot short stories, or a collection of a few of them? If so, then where the plot? (aside from the pop-philosophy?)

Sorry, it's been a long while since I read any Asimov - although for a long time I have wondered about the lack of any mainstream Asimovian movies.

If I remember correctly I wanted to make "Mr. Robot" into tinfoil after half of the book

But I have a feeling that those chapters wont be in the film
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

"I, Robot" is set in 2050 A.D. where robots are used as assistants for their human co-workers.

In this story Det. Spooner (an anti-robot type played by Smith) investigates the murder of Dr. Hogenmiller, who works at U.S. Robotics. The primary suspect is a robot named Sonny, even though this would mean he violated the “Three Laws of Robotics” which is supposedly impossible.

Dr. Calvin, a specialist in robotic psychology, assists Spooner in his investigation.

It was done for TV in a 1964 episode of The Outer Limits. Unfortunately the screenplay was butchered into a courtroom drama; something akin to "Frankenstein" meets "Perry Mason."

I found it, it's called Les Robots which is hardly a translation to I, Robot.

If I did read it, it must have been back in grade school which I don't remember much of.

Bicentennial Man was a horrific thing. I don't know if Asimov himself or someone else was responsible for changing a perfectly good novella into a novel-length (and hence feature-film-length) story.

THAT SAID... I enjoyed the movie, it was just a mockery of Asimov.

Will Smith is an okay actor. He just doesn't get enough opportunity to take on juicy dramatic roles that will make people forget "Wild Wild West."

"I, Robot ", the book while it is just a short story, ended up being a series exploring how or when the "Three Laws of Robotics" could be compromised and etcetra. "The Bi-Centenial Man" was originally a short story which was expanded into a novel by Asimov himself. However the movie couldnt do justice to the book. While Asimov didnt want it to happen that way, "I. Robot" ended up to be the link in all his stories, right up to the Foundation Series where one of the main characters is a Mind-Influencing Robot who in true robot intelligence comes up with the Zeroth Law .

What is happening is probably Hollywood jumping on the bandwagon of making movies on book series (they can make sequels and the story is already there, Lotr, Xmen, Charlies's Angels Comes to mind).

As long as they dont make movies that would make Asimov turn in his grave.
