How about Ott's Carmina Burana? You may have heard little bits of it used in publicity clips, but the whole work is one of the outstanding pieces of 20th century music (and I say this as being more of an amateur of baroque music).

May I suggest:
- Joy Division (esp. "Closer", when you are alone and can spend a few hours relistening)
- Crass ("Christ, the album")Join MURCs Distributed Computing effort for Rosetta@Home and help fight Alzheimers, Cancer, Mad Cow disease and rising oil prices.

Purcupine Tree is quite trippy - esp. Voyage 34. Synesthesia (also porcupine tree) is also good.
I quite franky can't understand what people find so great about Norah Jones. I find her music quite boring honestly. Maybe I'm missing something, or it's just not my taste

Umfriend, that was the purpose of this thread - maybe starting a review thread keeps it cleaner. Good idea

Porcupine Tree are excellent!! Especially their non-psychedelic stuff. Their latest disc "In Absentia" is fantastic. Other amazing Porcupine Tree albums to get are "Signify", "Recordings", "Stupid Dream", "The Sky Moves Sideways", "Lightbulb Sun". These guys sorta picked up where Pink Floyd left off and took it into another direction. Fantastic band that not many people have heard of.
For the hard rock/metal people, find the following songs:
Paradise Lost - Perfect Mask
Paradise Lost - Erased
Paradise Lost - Small Town Boy (cover of the Bronski Beat tune Az mentioned, but much improved over the original)
Testament - Down For Life (I used to hate these 'old school' guys, but this song is ok)
Rammstein - Iche Will
Rammstein - Zwitter
Rammstein - Du Hast (classic)
Cemetary - Silicon Karma
For the melancholic and depressed:
Asche and Spencer - Under The Stars (Monsters Ball soundtrack)
Raison D'etre - the disc "In Sadness, Silence, & Solitude". Not for suicidal people.
Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook - Sleeps With The Fishes
Damn I have weird taste in tunes. I'm probably the only guy I know that listens to George Carlin in the car.Bart
