Recommend a MOVIE thread

We have one for music, why not one for movies? Forgive me if this has already been done to death. I read 6 pages into The Lounge and didn't see one, so here goes. Don't care if its old movies, new movies, DVDs or Divxs. Name some really good/bad flicks you've seen recently. Here's mine:

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - LOVED this one. This will be in my top 10 for quite some time I think. George Clooney did a fantastic job directing this imho. Rutger Hauer makes an AWESOME cameo. He could have been one of the best actors of our time; crying shame. THANKS GEORGE for bringing him out of B-movie hell, even if only for a short while. Fairly dark movie; darkly funny at times.

The Salton Sea - might be Val Kilmers best performance ever. See it and decide. Very good show.

Adaptation - Nicolas Cage ruled this movie. He should keep doing stuff like this. Quirky movie, in a very good way.

Matrix Reloaded - this just plain SUCKED. I had to get that out.

Angel Heart - Mickey Rourke before he fell off the planet. Lisa Bonet getting booted off the Cosby show after making this. Nuff said. Very dark movie, REEKS of evil. One of my favorites.

Dead Ringers - Cronenberg masterpiece. AMAZING performances by Jeremy Irons. A must-see.

Crash - I went on a Cronenberg binge. This one STANK. Nothing but weird soft-core porn, but you get to see ALL of Deborah Kara Unger. Yummy.

Scanners - Cronenberg classic from 1981. Doesn't hold up that well today. Kinda ruined by a terrible performance from the lead actor.

Crash -uh, didnt finish the film, got bored.

Nikita (the original Luc Besson version)
The Boondock Saints (it's very outlandish in concept, but it still packs a Tarantino-esque punch)
American Psycho (Christian Bale talking about 80's music while getting ready to axe someone...yum)
Femme Fatale-an intriguing movie made by Brian DePalma, very much eye-candy included

Huzzah! Someone else that has seen this! GREAT FRIGGIN' MOVIE.

I disagree. I think that there were some extremely cheezy sequences that could have been better with a little extra effort (c'mon guys!), but overall it was excellent. We've hashed this out quite a bit, and if you didn't think it was cool (but you DID like the first one) then you didn't watch it closely enough.

I kinda liked this... but then again I'm sort of a sucker for James Spader. Yeah, I know - and I'm not even gay.

There are WAY too many movies I could add, so I'll just list the ones that stick out from very recent memory...

Back to the Future - No, seriously! This movie is GREAT. All the little touches that you miss the first time or three really make this film.

Grosse Point Blank - John Cusack is always good, but this movie is a masterpiece. You can watch it 20 times and STILL find something new in here to love.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - More like 'my big fat Greek not funny movie that is pointless and has ugly people in it'. Yuck. My wife, because she feels compelled to like it because it is a "chick flick", says "It was... ok." BLEH.

Equilibrium - Makes you think. And has awesome (if a bit cheezy) gun karate.

Bruce Almighty - Good flick.

X2 - Another good flick.

Unfaithful - I kept hearing that this was good. And I'm mixed. Any movie that features Diane Lane naked and begging to be f****d for 90% of its length is a GOOD movie. But any movie with Richard Gere where he doesn't die... is a bad movie. And the ending was stupid. And in fact much of it was stupid. Big letdown, but I bookmarked the nudie scenes. LOL.

Lilo & Stitch - Great Disney flick. The little touches are the best.

Treasure Planet - BAD BAD BAD Disney flick. Better than "Pocahontas" (aka Poke a Hot Ass) only because it's in the future, and therefore can't involve revisionist history or a rewriting of the feminist movement to set it in colonial times.

Pocahontas - The worst Disney movie of all time. Might just be the worst movie of all time, period. It has revisionist history... and if you're GONNA revise history, might as well make it have a happy ending... but NO. No happy ending. The animals don't talk. And it has trite feminist overtones, as well as hippie tree hugging crap like "the trees are so smart if you listen with your heart". AVOID AT ALL COSTS. If you are exposed, the only thing that can save you is repeated exposure to "Reservoir Dogs", over a two-week period.

Reservoir Dogs - The film that made everyone think that Quentin Tarantino could direct. They were WRONG, but this film is so good that it fooled everyone.

Pulp Fiction - As a series of short, amusing anecdotes... this film works very well. As a film, it is utter crap. Tarantino can't direct, or act.

Unbreakable - EXCELLENT movie. M. Knight Shyamalamadamabingabang at his finest. Better than Signs, better than Sixth Sense. I know, everyone will flame me, but I liked it the best. Sorry.

The Ring - Scary, but at the same time NOT scary. I spent the entire movie going "ooh this is scary... but I'm not scared". *shrug* Best in genre, even if that genre is churning out utter drek.

Fear Dot Com - WORST in genre. Avoid this turd at all costs.

Ok, I'm out of steam for now. I'm sure I'll have more to add later.

Yup, Cusack is always awesome, and this is no exception.

The greek father was the only really funny part of this movie. Otherwise, yawnfest.

I think this movie was hurt by the overwhelming popularity of Sixth Sense. People went in expecting too much. It's really a very good movie. WAY better than Signs.

This one was more disgusting than scary. Kind of like Friday the 13th without the laughs...

Some I don't like:

K-19: I expected better from Miss Bigelow. You never get the feeling that you're on a frickin submarine! The only good scenes are those on the ice, IMHO - yes, I'm spoiled by Das Boot.

Solaris: When I just saw the mini-trailer (the station floating above the planet, some soothing space music, and the word SOLARIS in that nice font), I thought "I'll see this one. It must be good. Something creepy yet soothing with subconscious anxiety and beautiful, slow pictures with beautiful, slow music between violence, gore, and fear... this'll be great." When I read that it was based on a story by Stanislav Lem, I was even more excited - "A thinking man's space movie", I thought. Then I heard about George Clooney being naked, and I thought "Sigh... well, they have to offer some incentive to the ladies". Then I heard about George Cloonie being naked for the next few weeks before the movie started, and I was getting very annoyed, but kept my hopes up. Then I watched it. It was sooooo boring. The story was crap. Clooney's wife looked like plastic. You see his butt for two seconds and his leg for two more. In the end, you see some beautful colored trippy effects, but you don't notice them anymore because the movie was just so bad.

Wow, I've written much about that one

Oh, and ANY movie with Val Kilmer is doomed, except for Top Secret. The teeth! The Teeth!

Platoon - Charlie Sheen might never be that good again

Jackie Brown - Good Movie but maybe underappreciated
