I've only heard "Frantic" and the title track so far and while I agree that these songs aren't perfect (especially the vocals), I like them a lot more than the boring mainstream crap that Metallica played on "Load" and "Reload". In fact, I am surprised that they have returned to a pretty raw and aggressive sound because it seemed that they had specialized in "supermarket background music"

The problem is, it's hard to take a group seriously when they have embraced... actually playing well.

I hate to sound like a musical snob, but a lot of "metal" involves yelling and breaking instruments, and not a lot of actual talent.

Lots of guitarists can shred, but few of them know enough theory to make a difference.

      Few singers can actually sing.

The fact that Metallica evolved past the "really fast, really loud, really angry" and into "we can play, we can sing" was commendable, even if it did steal a certain... intensity from the music.

Now they've tried to re-harness the intensity, and in the process forgotten how to play and sing.

Not acceptable. Sorry. When you're young and haven't figured it out yet that's one thing, but when you've thrown it away on purpose that's just sad.

        Exactly, Gurm.

Actually, St. Anger kinda reminds me of I disappear. That one, too, had some good part in the refrain, but the whole song was just kinda.. boring.
