Nice Tolkien Books!

When I decided to reread the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings before the films came out, I went and read my Dad's copies since my old paperbacks were falling apart, so I decided these books were special enough to get a good hardbound edition. I couldn't find any I liked in the US versions, but in the UK Tolkien has a different publisher, Harper Collins. Went to amazon.co.uk rather than amazon.com, and found these there:

Just got them yesterday and they are very nicely done editions. Nice tight clothbound hardbacks with gilt lettering, paper inside looks like photo paper (except for the Silmarillion, which is just nice thick paper), so they probably won't fall apart too easily.. nice art on the dustjackets and throughout! If you other yanks go to Amazon.co.uk, you will find lots of things you wouldn't find in the US, and their normal shipping only took 5 days. I would like to get a few things from amazon.de too, but the euro is so damned high right now..

I have the Millennium Edition of LOTR.

It's published in the way Tolkien would have preferred. He wrote it as one big book, but wasn't done with it all at once and wanted to release it as 6 volumes with a later appendix. This represents that format. It's also the authoritative version of the text.

Which, while the text is not as authoritative, are VERY nicely leatheretted and bound, in nice boxes.

I'd LOVE it if they did up the Silmarillion and/or Histories of Middle Earth in that style, but they seem unlikely to do so.

I just borrowed them from my universitys library, and those are real nice, old bound books, with a very plain cover. Nothing fancy, but very appealing

Gurm: yeah, i know.. it's amazing how much money one could spend on books there.. I want that three volume History of Middle Earth too, but I might have to wait a bit. There was an earlier hardbound edition of those (Black, in a slipcase) I wanted, but alas, they are all gone now.

Yes, I wanted that black slipcase one as well. It went away recently, too.
