  • Unhindered Childbirth

I was searching from some specific guidelines on labour when I came across this.

I am trying to imagine being handed that peice of paper at 4am..... Now I am all for patient education and freedom of choice but this is just plain wierd.

    What do you think?

Oh, and as a side note, what a logo!!!

You don't even want to see what they suggest you do with the placenta!

    *edit*
Ah, it's ok, i thought they were gonna drink the placenta

I think its all very noble, and yes natural childbirth as its benifits, however the mother/child fatality rate has dropped for a reason.

Well, if the new mom expects things to go smoothly without the aid of a doctor, she needs to practice some stretching exercises first. This can be an adventure with all sorts of fruit and household items, and hubby can have all sorts of fun with his whole hand.

Yeah, no drinking it, just cooking it in a stew to eat later, that's all.

                    17. At no time will my baby be separated from me. All newborn care will be done in the same room with me and preferably with the baby in my arms.
What if the mother passes out (or something similar) and the baby is about to die unless she is taken to such and such departement for a special yet simple procedure?

It doesn't always work in the patients favor and some of those rules could be detrimental depending on the given situation .

                    14. The delivery will take place in a quiet, respectful atmosphere with dimmed lights, soft music, and quiet, calm speaking if speaking is necessary.
I agree with this, anything to make the birthing process the least traumatic for the baby can't be a bad thing.

                    13. It is my desire to receive no assistance of any kind with my birth unless I specifically ask for that assistance. I am at the hospital only so that emergency help is available if necessary. I will require no routine care of any kind.
This is for the patients safety, refusing to get any of this done could have some serious consequences. I don't agree with it.

                    5. Because of my belief that ultrasound is an unproven and possible unsafe technology, no electronic monitors or dopplers will be used. Monitoring of fetal heart tones will be done through fetoscope only.
                    This is not smart.

All in all, I don't approve of that so called "Simple Plan".

They can go directly to hell.

If these sorts of people had been in charge when Julie gave birth, both she and Logan would be DEAD.

                      That's a comforting thought, huh?

                      Let's see:

                      - Logan was so immense that Julie sustained "level 4 tearing". This means that the ... err ... front passage ... and ... back passage ... were no longer separated. Without IMMEDIATE surgical correction, this would have resulted in fatal sepsis within a very short time, resulting in the death of my wife.

                      - Logan's blood sugar was so low that he was in danger of going into insulin shock. He would not eat from Julie, and she wasn't producing enough ANYWAY. He would have DIED within hours.

These people need to wake up and realize that there are REASONS for modern medicine.

These are the same people that don't vaccinate their kids, and then they're all shocked and amazed and horrified when the kid DIES from measles. Yeah, measles KILLS PEOPLE. That's why there's a vaccine.

Now... *sigh* on a more receptive note:

Doctors ARE too intrusive. We were never offered a chance to bank the umbilical cord blood, something I would have liked to do because of the viable fetal stem cells it contains... which, since they came from Julie and Logan, they would have every right to use in a therapeutic manner later in life.

Additionally, they DID spirit him away for quite some time. I would have preferred that he stay in the room with us.

HOWEVER... these people go too damn far. I hope they come to their senses before their poor decisions kill some poor child or mother.

                        I like the contradiction between:
                        14. The delivery will take place in a quiet, respectful atmosphere with dimmed lights, soft music, and quiet, calm speaking if speaking is necessary.
                        and
                        12. During labor and delivery I will be using vocalization as one of my tools for coping with labor. I find that it helps me to cope with the intensity of contractions while remaining totally relaxed. Hospital staff need to be aware that these vocalizations are constructive and that I am not making them because I am in pain, am distress, or need assistance.
I keep forgetting about your private health care.... the thought of the NHS entertaining this is comical.

@GURM: Yeah, I agree with you. A lot happens very quickly.... and there isn't always time to sit down and explain thoroughly as to what is going on... but that's what antenatal classes are for.... In an ideal world....

We took those classes. None of them prepared us for the sort of damage an 11Lb. child with a perfectly round head will do to the female body.

None of them prepared us for "your child has a couple of dangerous health problems and we just don't have time to ask your permission so we're TELLING you what we're doing".

And in the end, everything was fine - thanks to modern medicine and highly competent doctors.

                            DOCTORS.

                            Not "birth assistants".

                            Not "doulas".

                            Not "perineal massage therapists".

                            Dumb****s.
