Pit, we call those guys would-be policemen, righteous types. That's where I like POWER. When he looks in the mirror he sees something not to mess with and hopefully pulls his horns in. If not, just dust the SOB before he knows what's happened.
When I see these and many other types I have no qualms because the game they are playing has nothing to do with driving.
Unfortunately, it's mainly the ego games that distrupt the flow of traffic, cause accidents and take all the relaxation, fun and humor out of driving. How can you possibly take anything seriously?
Who cares?

Yeh Driving is mainly a pain in the ass these days round town. People that can't read signs can't tell the time and have no common sense.Originally posted by mutz

Well, what's worse are drivers who are more concerned (read afraid) about signs, obeying the law, driving 10% under the speed limit "just in case", eyes glued to the speedo needle, ignoring the rear view mirror, one foot always on the brakes, think the car will break from bumps in the road, try to drive around curves without the car tilting even a tad, look in all directions six times before driving off on green (by then yellow), depress the gas pedal never more than two millimeters, study the gear pattern on the shift knob every time they shift, panic and brake at the sight of a police car or any vehicle with lights on top, road workers wearing neon stripes, garbage trucks, buses, etc., etc.
I would understand if there was an L on the back, but they have probably been driving that way for twenty years. I rode with one of these types ONCE, but it explained a lot.
This thread could go on forever, but I just ran out of gas...

usually they have driven 60 or 70 years like that. without an accident (or they forgot about them, senility is a bitch).Originally posted by mutz

while ranting about drivers: is this saying about drivers with hats (be aware of them!) only used here in austria or elsewhere too?

The people doing the survey want the Government to place camera's at lights. For once I agree with this but it won't catch the cyclists. I think it's time that cyclists had to have a registration number and paid insurance.
Yeah, back in my biking days, i used to run lights a lot...if it was a desolate intersection. It's too hard to stop and start up again.

Nah, those are the guys who CAUSE accidents...because they drive slow, traffic gets bunched up behind them...people rage and pass them, sometimes doing stupid things.
What's wrong w/ a driver w/ a hat?

bad experiences... shared by many people all over the world, as it seems.
quite strange. I sense that there is some conspiracy initiated from the automobile-industry.... :P

I have a CAP I sometimes put on when driving with the roof open, but somehow it feels wrong, like my radar has a lid on it, which is probably what happens with Hat Drivers.
no radar = no awareness, oblivion of surroundings, fully occupied in own head. How can you possibly take anything seriously?

We have one Taxi driver here who is almost like that... it's scary! Also, a friend of ours can't drive and talk at the same time: he always looks at me when I'm talking to him, WHEN I AM SITTING IN THE REAR and he's driving. And he's not a very good driver when he's not disturbed.Originally posted by mutz

BTW, I think people with hats or people who don't take their hat off when driving are often very timid people, like the ones Mutz described in the quote above. So half of them drive like if they blink, they're dead INSTANTLY, and the other half can't face that they're just poor drivers and thus drive like they're the kingsof the road, when in fact they're far from it.

Well I drive a car, a scooter, a cycle and when I can't avoid it I'm occassionally a pedestrian, so I guess I'm fllamebait for the lot of you
GNEP. Oxford may be marginally laid out for cyclists, but it isn't well laid out. Given that most of the Students cycle straight through or worse turn right across red lights it seems a waste of green paint to give them a "stacking" area at the junction.
PIT: haven't you seen the hedgehog campaign? Children under 12 can't judge distance/speed well enough to cross the road, they shouldn't do it. (I'm sure I will be corrected if I am wrong) they are being actively discouraged from crossing the road on their own at the moment.
Taz: I guess it's hard to distinguish the irresponsible 16 year old cyclist who just bought a scooter from the responsible driver who bought a scooter to save petrol (granted we are probably in the minority) and drives it responsibly.
The Editor: anyone that sneaks up the inside of a another vehicle, unless it is in a clearly designated lane for the purpose, is taking their life into their own hands.
However 2 people in Oxford have died at a junction while using a clearly designated cycle lane to pedal straight ahead inside a lorry at a junction with no legal left turn, where the lorry climbed over a traffic island to make the illegal left turn.
Mutz: while I agree with what I think you are referring to as the "pork pie hat" syndrome I think you are verring a bit close to the "I can drive as fast as I want if I deem it safe to do so, because I'm a good/experienced/etc driver" syndrome. If you didn't mean to, sorry.
"Here lies the grave of Elijah Grey,
Who died defending his Right of Way.
He was right, dead right as he sped along;
And now he's as dead as if he'd been wrong"
Apologies if you'd heard that one..
DaveDon't make me angry...
