Wow .. 60k ... Surely you had health insurance ? That usually pays out first... then your insurers claim it back off the hotel !!

Cant understand why you had such a bad reaction to the bite... Back home (Western Australia) people get bitten by "Redbacks" (black Widows) quite regularly ... Unless your very young or old.. (in which, it probably would kill) ..It usually just hurts like hell !!

Like everyone else though, glad to see ya "made it" !!

Don't know what their bite is like in WA, but I can tell you what they are like in Virginia where I got bit. Very painful and takes a long time to heal. Your spider had a red stripe on the back. The black widow has a red hour glass on the belly.

Their poison is really their digestive juice, and much stronger than that of the average spider. Their poison breaks down the flesh very rapidly and it is hard to stop. You are then very susceptible to secondary infections and the whole thing can get out of hand very quickly if you don't get medical attention quickly. And it hurts like hell. Like any bite, how dangerous it is depends on where the bite is and how long it takes you to get to the doc.

I got bit on the leg and still have a scar the size of a silver dollar. A friend of mine got bit on the chest and has a scar the size of a football. Liz IS lucky.

...this was probably more than you wanted to hear.

I belive the black widdow and red back are in the same family.

Red Backs are aggressive little sods, fortunatly never been bitten by one, not for their lack of trying mind you.

A healthy adult will usually survive a single bite by one (no medical treatment) but you'd be sick for quite a while.

the red back poison disables your immune system....which means you die from other sicknesses not from the poison. Nasty..

Damn Liz, I'd say be glad it wasn't a brown recluse. Their bite is much like that of a black widow, but after about a week the bite area is already starting to deteriorate.

I suggest getting medical insurance at some point ( or moving to Canada.. close enough and we have free medical ).. having to wait a week, before going to the hospital, may be too long a wait in the future.. and what would these forums be like without the avatar tease

Cant you sue the Hotel ?? I know it's not completely their the fault but then again they didn't exactly handle the situation perfectly.

                          Hot damn.
I have handled quite a bit of poisionous spiders (yeah, even a couple of black widows / or near of kind). Never got bitten, never really considered it dangerous (and Im a biologist! yeay!).

I really, really, really believe in government payed health care.

                          Best of luck!
