  • More RIAA filth

    read here

Basically they're suing the owner of the net account through which the music was shared, after forcing the provider to hand over the address and name.

Fair enough if you ask me. This quote is gold:

"I don't think anybody knew this was illegal, just a way to get some music."

If they go after enough people, they will eventually annoy someone like the unabomber or Tim McVeigh, and that will be the end of them.

Nah. They just don't understand how dependent on computers they are... and won't until some hacker takes them down.

Why do I get the feeling nobody will really want to go hard on that hacker?

The problem is that up until now these big companies have been able to prevail over the pesky "consumer" by buying off the government.

Problem is, it's getting nearly impossible for the government to legislate ANYTHING to do with the 'net.

That's the big problem. It's like "carnivore" or "echelon". If I have to explain the utter infeasibility of these systems to someone ONE MORE TIME, I think I'll barf.

But these big companies don't care much about technical infeasibility. They want their blood money, and don't much care how they get it. The problem is that the government is starting to be disinclined to play ball. Although I think our congress is hopelessly antiquated and corrupt, they've displayed a remarkable tendency of late to bite the hands that feed them - if their electorate wants it.

There are several bills in congress right now that would render the DMCA utterly moot. One of them even says in EXTRA blunt language that "the consumer can make a copy of ANYTHING that enters their possession" or some such. Worded so there's no wiggle room. How's that for the odds being stacked in our favor?

These big evil corporate slugs are desperate now. They're trying to sue everyone and scare us off BEFORE they get cut off at the knees by the government and the will of the people (which for a change the government seems inclined to honor).

And we the people certainly WANT P2P.

I still don't understand why the RIAA hasn't grasped the concept that the internet is the new radio or MTV ... because, well, both of those medium just suck these days. MTV is basically a soft-porn channel, and radio only plays music every once in a while between commercials.

If they would just embrace the internet and use it as a medium to promote their music they would make a killing. Even if they couldn't sell an entire album because it mostly sucks, they could at least make some profit off of it via singles sales.

As I like to say, damn money grubbing bastards!

I'm reminded of a line from "Kill the Beast" by Ashman/Menken...

We don't like what we don't understand, in fact we fear it...
