I saw this article about people who have given up their land line and use cell phones only. What do you do?

I have a work Cell, and a land line at home. My wife has a cell that is her personal one, but she is always home.

Cell. What is the point of a Land line? I am never home anyway!

I know my parents "cut the cord" a few months ago. The local phone company just charges too much, and with the Cell, they get all the free long distance.

I have both but my wife seems to think we need the land line as well. Otherwise I would just have my cell phone.

I'm pretty old fashioned in this regard. I actually don't like talking on the phone, and the idea of carrying one around with me is unacceptable. I couldn't stand it. I like the idea of a stationary phone. It allows me to run away.

The answering machine and voice mail are brilliant inventions, however. The inventor of the telephone answering machine should be given the Nobel Prize and canonized as a saint.

Have both a landline and a mobile. But only really use the mobile or the phone at work Landline is just there so I can have ADSL... and under my tenancy agreement we couldn't have it switched off anyway...

Well I plan on using my cell as my primary phone when I move, but currently have a land line and a cell.

Here its difficult. Land line is cheaper - still pay timed local calls, but to use a cell only gets very expensive.

on the other hand you need to 'buy' an analogue land line (about $700 in the local for new and $400 for second hand)

So young people either get a rental ISDN line or live with cell only. (Basically I can get an ADSL only rental line, but thats an extra $20 a month.)
Depends on how long you plan to be stable in this country.

Actually the cell is usually kept in the car.

My land line is $50/mo. I get unlimited calls any time, anywhere in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and US Principalities (such as Puerto Rico). Additionally, all international calls are $0.14/min.

No cell phone plan can beat that, period.

Our cable phone is $27.50/mo + unlimited near zone calls + LD which is .05/minute. Since we make very few LD calls with the landline our LD bill typically runs <$3/month.

Our cell is ~$35/mo and includes unlimited week nights, unlimited weekends and long distance to all the continental US, which covers everyone in our family.

We never use up our monthly minutes either since 99% of the day calls are 1 minute to/from home to see if the one shopping forgot something.

I'm using both land line and cell.
I envy all of you lucky unlimited bastards... Here we pay $0.70/h for domestic calls at night, $1.40/h in daytime.
There are no way to get unlimited calls.
Internet gets a bit expensive with the good old 56k.

I can't wait until I go to University this month, 10MBit for $16/month and no need for a land line.

You can do that with your cell as well

I do it all the time. I get a lot of crap from my buds about it. They somehow seem to think there's a law that says you must carry your cell with you everywhere you go If I don't want to be disturbed I leave it at home when I go out... simple as that. If somebody calls the answering "machine" gets it.

I didn't get a cell so people could always get in touch with me. I got it because first of all there was no land line installed in my apartment and I don't wanna shell out that kind of cash. And in any case the cell is cheaper to use than any land line I can get here in Denmark.
