Alright, just sat down to watch The Punisher again, but now I am wondering if it really was the film with the highest body count in history (not counting war films.) Here's the task, gentlemen and ladies (should you choose to accept it): Let's count the number of onscreen deaths by homicide in the top contenders and report back on which is really the deadliest movie in film history. Here are the parameters:
1) No war movies. This is just an unfair advantage. If we count warfare, Spartacus, Gladiator, and Braveheart would surely win hands down. We are talking about random mayhem here.
2) No deaths by natural causes or disease.. some film about the bubonic plague doesn't count.
3) The deaths must be on screen, not implied. And seas of dead bodies after the fact don't count either. The Death Star's destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars killed billions, but we don't see it, really. And though there are lots of bodies shown in The Killing Fields, we don't see them all die.
4) Orcs don't count toward total body count, (but Elves or others who we are expected to relate to as human do.) Anything that can be construed as some sort of monster also does not count, but humans killed by such monsters (such as Godzilla) do qualify toward total body count.
That's about it.. I'll count The Punisher tonight, and nominate some other good films with lots of mayhem in them. I'm sure others have some ideas too.. Here are my suggestions:
Hard Boiled (John Woo Film.. someone on some other board mentioned this as #1)
The Killer (another Woo film, mentioned by Jammrock.)
Commando (Schwarzenegger film)
Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (Stallone- technically i don't know if you could consider this a war film or not)
The Godfather Saga (prob can't come close, but most of it was pretty graphic)
