Doh for Nvidia...guess they PO M$ too much
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I think NV may have been quite happy to get away from MS, as it was MS did screwed NV not the other way around...and chances are they will do the same to ATI if they are not careful.

ATi has been around for a long time and has a lot of experience working with big companies and special projects like this. They did the video card for both the Nintendo N64 and Gamecube, amongst several other large OEM deals they handle.

What appeal do consoles have to you nowadays besides the tech? None of them speak "classic" to me. I have a bunch of the old ones. 2NES, 1SNES, 2Genesis, and 1Dreamcast but I cannot find any interest in the new ones.

Some style of games are best played on consoles, like fighting, racing, some RPG, sports, adventure and a few others. Those style of games really aren't popular on PC's and are made almost exclusively for consoles. There are ports, but the ports are far less than perfect.

Plus you can get a console, game and 2 controllers these days fro $150-$200, which is less than what many people pay to upgrade their video card. The games on PC and Console are about the same price, but with a console there's no worry about upgrading costs for at least 3-4 years, while on PC it's almost a yearly event.

So it all comes down to what type of games you like and how much cash you are willing to spend playing them. Since my core gaming is FPS and RTS, consoles don't work for me. When the muchkin gets older, I'll get a Nintendo box of some sort for us to spend some father/son time playing games on.

I have an X-Box and for the last 9 months it has been nothing but a DVD palyer for my projector, odd game like Tony Hawks but they just don't manage to hold my attention for too long.

As Jammrock said some games are definately made for consoles, hopefully going to have a lot of fun with KOTR, just have to get some cash first.

Anything that throws a bit more money towards ATi is good in my books. Would have been nice if Matrox got the contract but hey...

AFAIK, no. N64 was the baby of SGI.

I don't know about that, I hear that NV screwed MS over on pricing...

AFAIK, it was a little of both, but mostly M$. nVidia was required by contrct to supply X amount of chips to M$. M$ demanded the chips at a lower cost so they could cut the cost of the Xbox without taking a huge financial hit. They argued that it was within their contractual rights to request a cheaper price on the chip as the fabrication costs of the chip was reduced over time.

nVidia refused to sell the chip at a lower cost and lawsuits ensued.

Yup, that's what happens when you deal with a cocky company NV!

                          Congrats ATI!

We need surround console gaming, come on Matrox

                          Cheers,
