Does it really matter that much? It might reduce the volume of loveable nonsense a bit, but I guess people who want to post-whore will always find one excuse or another... (boredom for instance? ) But if you want to, sure, go ahead - no objections from me

I'll give you a hint, when i backed up the db yesterday - with a little help from the murc game thread. db is now 700mb+

Wow. It's getting quite hefty... Does a single thread with 1400-odd posts in it, most of the pictures simply external links, really take up that much space?

Also, the MURC game is actually not a particularly whorish thread - it really is more of a game IMHO... now the test threads on the other hand...

i havn't checked the exact cause of the size increase, i belive there are quite a few uploaded images in the thread (keep in mind max img size is 200kb or so) 5x images = 1mb ish. not hard to increase it.

sorry let me repharse that, the backup file is up to 700+ from 500 ish. db size is lower. but you get the picture.

attachment table is just over 100mb. also our serch index takes up almost as much space as the actual posts table.

Dan keep in mind that a single post even if all it has is once character plus the attachment, still takes up a full record in the db

PS, the picture thread is fine its all good fun (I think) just something to be aware of is all.

(remember I need to back this thing up every other week or so

I seriously doubt disabling the post count would eliminate ANYTHING other than the "test" threads (maybe) and the "woo I hit 4000!" threads (definitely).

How big a percentage are those threads? Miniscule, I'm willing to bet.

Sasq: have you thought about excluding the Lounge from the search table (if possible...)? I mean, surely most searches done are on more useful topics in the other forums. Another idea - put a notice up reminding people to be careful only to attach images if really necessary - and to link if possible. Also perhaps an informal rule to allow linked pictures only in the picture thread...

I can't do the search change to this forum in vb2, vb3 has the ability (been playing with the the last day or two) but its still in beta, gold will be a month or two away - hopefully.

How about simply blocking the New MURC Game thread when it reaches 4,000 posts or 100 pages, which it will do shortly? Then kill it a week or so later with a ban on resurrecting it or similar.

I admit, this is one thing I enjoy about the Lounge and I have downloaded two pics on it, but both under 40 kb.

Then ban all users with over 2,118 post counts
