Same here...my Advanced Reading teacher ran us through a KILLER Speed Reading phase in our semester....after a week, most people were reading 600-800 WPM with total comprehension, and 800-1200 with 80% comprehension, which was the goal. It has really helped me over the years.
It never ceases to amaze me that most people can't read much past 400 WPM, and most sure as hell can't contextualize a sentence as they read it.Hey, Donny! We got us a German who wants to die for his country... Oblige him. - Lt. Aldo Raine

I don't know how fast I read, only that people accuse me for just flipping the pages and pretending to readIf there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

They TRIED to teach us speed reading in middle school...
But my initial scores showed that I read with 100% comprehension around 1500-2000WPM, so it was pretty much pointless.
I love showing up speed readers. They scan a page, only get 60-80% of it, and I'm two pages ahead with 100%.

Any tips/pointers for a slower reader? I am a slow reader, and it drives me nuts after I read a book for an hour and my brain starts to turn into mush (at which point I am retaining 0% of what I'm reading).Last edited by Ajax; 15 September 2003, 07:06.--Insert something here--

Those are the classic symtoms of reading something you aren't realy interested in.
Pick something else.
You will read just as slow, but the time will whizz by.

Our middle school teacher taught the Evelyn Woods program during summer vacation and instructed his charges with those techniques during the first marking period, which really helped us the rest of the year. Lots of very grateful people came out of his 7th grade English classes.

Yeah, I was about to suggest that you might have dyslexia or some other comprehension disability. There are those who have it very mildly and ENJOY reading - I'm convinced that Julie may be mildly dyslexic, she has a hard time with "left" and "right" - and those who have it very mildly and DON'T ENJOY reading - Julie's brother just plain never reads. Anything. Ever. Not even a magazine or newspaper other than the WSJ.
Get tested, but beyond that find something INTERESTING. Start with comic books, work up to graphic novels...
Anyone who has never read seriously (or been able to read seriously) pretty much has to start all over again. Pictures, pictures with words, words with pictures, then just words. It's a slow process - it takes most people 15 years to grow into their reading abilities.
