Okay, how about someone who reads at a fairly average speed? I've never timed myself, but I usually at least keep up with others when reading the same thing. I would like to be able to read faster though. What would you suggest?

      Agallag,

For you speed reading would probably work out. Just don't PUSH IT. There's no point in tripling your speed if you drop from 100% comprehension to 60% comprehension.

But if you do speedreading, and can get to say 1000wpm with 80% comprehension, that's... say... 600wpm with 100% comprehension which is STILL probably faster than what you do now.

I am a slow reader, but only because I love studying the language when I read. If you are reading as if you were a computer inputting information, that's one thing, and as a cog in the machine of regimented existence, that's all well and good. On the other hand, I learned to read for the enjoyment of it.. if you enjoy what you are doing, it makes little sense to try and get it over with quickly.
