  • Urk... Video game induced motion sickness

Was bored so I installed Quake and Tenebrae and played for a little bit while going "oohh, look at all the purty shiny walls", when I noticed that I had suddendly had a headache and nausea.

Moral of the story? Burn games that don't offer ways to turn off head-bobbing/sway!

Normally the effect is due to being drunk at the time.

      urghh
everything looks like they have poured ultra bright on it......
It looks even less realistic than the origianl quake

It's the same way you kan almost always spot CGI in movies, it shines to much
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

        how about this....

try running tenebrae with the following parameters: -debug -forceparhelia

that should enable the parhelia accelerated renderpath (which magically started working under the 1.05 driver set. i guess i missed something while i was on my 4 month absence.) and it might give you some of a performance boost.

Don't wanna even look at it. And I'm pretty sure it isn't always the motion head bob. Anyone ever played the game on the Amiga called Mercenary? That was (line/vector) 3D, but I got sick walking down corridors in that. No bob what so ever.

I have only ever had this happen with three games.
                1. Quake1 when it wasn't me playing after about an hour.
                2. Half Life - Opposing Force when I was running around a very large area looking for how to continue without a thing to shoot or do.
                3. A prerelease of a game with a really bad camera. I had to get up and walk around every thirty minutes or I would get sick to my stomach.

As long as I have something to keep my attention away from the movement, I am fine.

What's wierd is I can play Counter-Strike (well, could... I havn't played it much recently, the polished turd is losing its luster ) and not have the slightest problem. Same with Everquest, (same thing about the polished turd there too ) could play for hours without any problems. The first Jedi Knight game on the other hand made me ill after a few hours of playing. I think it's mainly a head-bobbing and/or sway issue. In Quake you'll notice that when you sidestep the camera leans in the direction you're moving.

sheesh... you guys would never have gotten along with any of the tournament Q3 matches we did using RA3...

aanyways, has anyone w/ a Parhelia tried those flags with tenebrae? can anyone?

I could give it a go DGhost, but I haven't downloaded Tenebrae yet (thanks for the link) and believe it or not I don't have a copy of Quake (which I presume one needs) - point me in the right direction to get everything I need and I can try it (not that I'm too lazy to search or anything...)

you should be able to grab a copy of quake shareware (which might work) from here. of course everything additional required to get tenebrae running is on the tenebrae homepage (here.

thanks for testing it out... unfortunately a friend has my Parhelia otherwise i could test it out in more depth myself.

Right. Had a quick go. Not very good performance, and some flashing texture corruption:

And here again, only this time a little more severe (!)...

This running on a Parhelia Retail, latest drivers (1.05s) with the parameters you gave me put into the tenebrae launcher - all other settings at default, except for the screen res which I set as shown here and also windowed...
