  • Lying DVD covers (Johnny Mnemonic)

I always prefer to buy the widescreen movies, simply because you get the full movie, none of this chopped off stuff. So it was kind of nice to see on the back of Johnny Mnemonic that it was one of those "Side A is a WIDESCREEN VERSION and preserves the original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio. Side B is a FULL FRAME/STANDARD VERSION and is re-formatted to fit your TV." Also under features it states "Widescreen or Standard Formats!" But this DVD is NOT double-sided. Nor does it have any selection in the menu to make it widescreen. It only has Start Movie, Languages/Audio Set Up, Subtitles, and Scene Selections.

I've looked all over on google and have found no other occurences of this on there. (Otherwise I'm the only one who got one like this, or nobody's complaining 'cause they haven't noticed.) The DVD itself just starts up and has the statement that it's been formatted to the TV.

This goes along with the gripe that Goodfellas is double-sided, but only because you have to flip the movie over in the middle of it. Lousy DVD producers....

heh, And here I thought that you were picking at the general problem with the text on the backside of a dvd never really describes the movie on the DVD, but instead some other movie

      Off Topic:
I just bought "Gladiator" from a DVD bargain bin in a local supermarket, just because I hadn't seen the movie before... The movie plays OK, but I have a strange feeling about it 'cause it comes in a one-DVD box, and the single disc that is inside looks pretty much self-printed and reads "Gladiator Collector's Edition Disc One"

Hey, you guys, Have you never heard that more pirated DVDs are on the market, sold through regular channels, than genuine editions? I've even bought what appeared to be genuine ones on DVD-R discs (of course, you can't see that before you get home and remove the shrink wrapping).

              My Johnny Mnemonic is double-sided.

Does yours have some kind of PICTURE on the front?

Maybe you got the superbit edition by mistake?

              What Region are you in?

Actually, we just got ripped on the exact same DVD... it's got the hideous close up of Neo... err... Keanu on the front, an "A Pulse-Pounding Cyber-Slam!" -Mike McKay, WBTV (CBS) CHARLOTTE on the bottom, in the back it has stated next to a little picture of the DVD menu at the bottom of a list of 5 different things, "Widescreen or Standard Formats!" At the bottom of the DVD it has the little box that says "Side A is a WIDESCREEN VERSION and preserves the original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ration. Side B is a FULL FRAME/STANDARD VERSION and is re-formatted to fit your TV." Region 1 obviously (bought it in the bargin bin at Wal-Mart for 5 or 6 bucks.)

Yes Gurm, it has the Picture on the front, I even (just to hazard a guess) put the disk upside down, and my DVD-ROM spit it back out. And no, it's not the Superbit edition, which is supposed to have both widescreen and standard as well.

Region 1. I got it at walmart for 6 bucks, so I guess I can't whine too much...

Yup, that's the EXACT same one I have. Lousy walmart!

By the way, all the reviews I saw on Amazon.com said this movie sucked. Well about 90% of them did. There was even one review where the person didn't even know what was going on in the movie the whole time. Who the hell writes these things anyhow?

I got mine at Walmart too. The ISBN/UPC are the same as yours. So is the packaging. Bummer, huh?

And I liked the movie. I mean, it wasn't as good as the short story - novellas based on short stories never are - and it DID kind of butcher Gibson's universe, but hey... it featured Ice T, which is always good.

about lying DVD covers... I've got a region-2 version of The 5th Element that says '16:9' on the back. Of course the contents is 2,35:1 movie letterboxed to 4:3

                          Region 2 versions generally stink.

Thats why I always buy region 1 instead.

depends.. if they do a proper re-transfer of the original film to PAL it will look better than an NTSC transfer (provided they did the job at least as good as on the NTSC transfer). I mean, there are plenty of crappy looking PAL transfers available here, but there also are some that look superb.

Over at avscience forum there are plenty of people from the US ordering region-2 PAL DVDs.
