  • Video of 100 tons of fireworks exploding

Found this linked over at Rage3D, it's rather impressive.

Oh, and I just noticed it's really a WMV file, not sure why it's got an .avi extension.

        Here's the thread over at Rage3D: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...eadid=33726465

They were having technical difficulty with their site earlier or I would have included the link in the original post.

Apparently they've not heard of zoning laws, it's mind boggling that they would allow the storage of explosives in the middle of a residential area. I understand that the depot was originally outside of town, but you don't just leave it there when housing expands to surround it, you either leave a clear area surrounding it or buy the property from them to get rid of it.

This happened in the Netherlands, not China.

With this sort of wussified concept of accountability, no one else should worry about storing huge amounts of fireworks in residential areas in Holland.

                        Long sentence avoided

Bakker and Pater were each fined 2,250 euros ($2,540) for violating safety regulations.

The men were found guilty of importing and selling illegal fireworks, breaking safety codes and violating storage licenses.

Prosecutors had demanded sentences of between 15 and 30 months, but the pair were both acquitted of the more serious charges of negligence for the fire.
According to one of those links, an additional 110 people were listed as missing and hope was fading that they would not be dead.. and the people responsible get a slap on the hand.. this is unconscionable!

Actually, a lot of ppl who were missing were simply out and were "found later". We do have zoning laws, but you can store certain amounts of fireworks in certain ways within residential areas (like shops selling the stuff may do as well). These regulations were clearly violated here, but the municipality had been stupid as well. The final point was that someonestarted a fire over there and that it could not be proven to be one of the directors (I think we still don't know for sure). One of the directors had effectively already left the (small) company, but the other was a weird fellow. It was a national disaster (OK, we are not used to a lot). The stupidest thing is that a lot of people were not compensated by anyone for their loss (well, not completely). And I am speaking material damage here.

KvH: The guy at the end says something like "IN the slow-motion last seconds we can clearly see the power of the explosion. Roofs are torn off the houses.

We have had a few of these kind of disasters in th epast couple of years.... A large fire at a cafe in Volendam at new-year's eve killed about 14 and has mutulated tens of people for life. Victims between 14 and 21 years I believe. In a way there were a lot of paralels between the two.
