This post reminded me of some kit I once broke. It was a glass disc about 6" in diameter. As you turned the disc, the amount of light it let through would vary. They cost over £1000 back in 1990. I slipped when positioning the optical sensor that senses the change from highest to lowest optical density and managed to snap it. That's over £1000 in the bin in about 2 seconds
It was also very embarassing
At least my employer could easily afford it.
