  • What's the most expensive thing you ever broke?

This post reminded me of some kit I once broke. It was a glass disc about 6" in diameter. As you turned the disc, the amount of light it let through would vary. They cost over £1000 back in 1990. I slipped when positioning the optical sensor that senses the change from highest to lowest optical density and managed to snap it. That's over £1000 in the bin in about 2 seconds It was also very embarassing At least my employer could easily afford it.

A lap-top computer went bangety-boom-boom-crash down some concrete stairs. It slipped off a pile of papers I was carrying. That was in the days when they cost ~$4,000.

I wasn't the instigator, but I was driving a brand-new Toyota Camry that was totalled (a 28 tonne truck took a dislike to it). That was $15k.

                            I wrecked a boat 3 months ago.

Sailed competition in a "just-a-bit-too-windy" weather. We where very nearly at the front, on the last leg of the race.

I thought: It will hold. And order the spiler (whats the word in english? The BIG piece of sail that you use with the wind in your back?) to be raised.

Well, 400 meters from goal there was a sudden surge in windstrenght, the mast broke and teared some pieces of stainless 1.2" support struts straight through the deck - we nearly capsized. After cutting the wreckage of the riggings away, we got towed to shore...
Price?? Hmm.. 60.000$ so far - but the next race isnt until april, so we have time enough to add more to the insurrance.

                            No place for second place.

I blew up 3 truck engines. First one wasn't my fault. The thermostat froze and by the time I pulled over there was a crack in the head.

2nd one was this stupid old '54 Ford and you had to put oil in it every other time you drove it. Well, I was told that I need not put oil in it the day I drove it. Cracked another head

And the last, well, it was definiely my fault I used to have to use a small screwdriver to hold the butterfly open in the morning on my jeep to get it started. Well, one day, the scredriver got sucked into the engine while I was trying to start it :O I slowly backed away from the jeep, waiting for something very bad to happen. After like 10 minutes, I ran over and shut off the jeep. I was only 15 and scared to death that my dad would kick my ass so I started it back up and drove away. I never told anybody...until 3 months later when the engine froze.

The mechanic shop found the screwdriver(what as left of it) along with a shattered piston.
