  • ROTK - doubts

Warning, this message surely contains spoiler about the film, and the subsequent thread will probably contain even more spoilers.
So, if you don't know how to read or that a book called "Lord Of The Rings" exists on Earth, please don't go on reading. You may discover that Frodo is out to bin the trash.

I was watching at the "behind the scenes" preview of ROTK, and noticed a couple of things that have left me full of doubts:
    1) It seems that there is a piece of the film where Aragorn has to discover if he can be the king, so he must go in a cave and pass a test. (Aragorn Jones and the last Keeper?)
I don't remember exactly the book, and I'd prefer to go bed with a drunken Wynona Judd (see here for reference) than sleepi...er, reading it again, but I'm pretty sure that JRRT would have preferred to go bed with a drunken Nick Nolte than writing such a trash sequence...or is that piece really in the book?

    2) All the trailers, interview and preview I've seen about the third film do the impossible to announce that there will be the huge loss of some important characters...that, and I don't remember someone dying at the end of the third book. At least, not someone of the was-fellowship...what has PJ invented this time?
Sat on a pile of deads, I enjoy my oysters.

Your right - unless the voyage through the tunnels of the dead, to reclaim the wow that was once broken, counts as a "test". It kind of does in the book - since only the true king kan relight the wow and undo the curse. But then again, only the true king can use the fern "KingsFoil" - which is used to heal the dear swordsmaiden, after she defeats the ringwraith.

Ah well. Better wait until the extended version.

Oh, and Im looking forward to "the Hobbit" as well. Quite smart to shoot it at the same time - since the main characters where allready hired.

MY GOSH, you mean THE GOOD GUYS WIN?

      Doubting Mustafa! (Name that movie...)

It certainly IS in the book. Aragorn has to walk the paths of the dead, if he hopes to stop the dark fleet from obliterating Gondor.

      Well, lessee...

      Theoden dies.

      Denethor dies.

      Faramir NEARLY dies.

      Gollum dies.

      Eowyn NEARLY dies.

      Merry NEARLY dies.

      Hope that helps.

All the main characters almost die for that matter; Pippin nearly gets crushed under a troll as they "attack" Mordor at the black gate, the effects of the Naz--- Ring wraith's (can't remember the proper spelling ) poisoned sword along with having carried the ring for a while really messes Frodo up. If you didn't want to know that information, you shouldn't have looked.

The Nazgul, and Frodo loses his finger to Gollum's hunger.... hmmm, Frodo lickin' good? And KFC announes Frodo Fingers as a LOTR sales gimmick.... Hey if they actually do, I want royalties!!!

Uh ... unless I missed something they did not, nor have not, shot the footage for 'The Hobbit'. Once Peter Jackson finishes RotK he is filming a remake of King Kong. After that he says he'll think about filming The Hobbit.

They filmed all three LotR movies back to back.

How to tell when someone has NOT read the book in English. No offense intended.

Dunno where you get your information. "The Hobbit" has NOT been shot, and there are at this time NO plans to make it... although Ian McKellen has pitched the idea of an epic 12-part miniseries to the bigwigs.

Yeah, ok, maybe it's the way it's explained by PJ, or simply the Italian traslation that is not that good. It clearly speak of a test to pass to become a king, and the way it was presented looked really like some sort of Indiana Jones enigma...

Theoden's death is clearly announced in the second book. Denethor's suicide is, again, as obvious as it could be.
Gollum's death was also the simpliest way to remove the character, so no surprise here too.

My doubt was that in the interview Mortessen clearly says that there will be the sacrifice of a someone really important, and I didn't remember someone really important dying.
                  Maybe the Dwarf will die...

I did read it three times.
The first one, it was my second fantasy book. It took 3 days to read it all (the appendixes, too).

The second time I did read LOTR, it took 45 days to finish it.

The third time it took nearly one month for the first chapter, then I put the book in the fireplace.

LOTR is really too full of old cliche' and way too epic to be readable, for me.

I was simply objecting to some of the terms you used, like:

                      "Tunnels of the dead"

                      "The fern, KingsFoil"

                      "The dear swordsmaiden"

Which reek of a poor translation.

                      -----------------

As for it being a "test", Aragorn clearly states in the book something to the effect of "if I can't make it through here I don't deserve to be king".

As for people dying, I have seen NO indication that PJ intends to kill anyone off that isn't killed off in the book. He already made Haldir die needlessly.

And there is NO clear indication in the SECOND book that Theoden will die. Go read it again, he dies in the THIRD book.

Take a look at the specials contained in TTT. There is a "behind the scenes of Return Of The King", that made me doubt about this. Again, maybe the translation was wrong

He dies in the THIRD, ok...but in the second book is presented with:
"And he is Theoden the King, who is currently under control of Saruman, and that will play the part of the tragic hero that dies tragically to clean his sins"
