  • Grizzly bear attack....

The attached pictures are of a Forest Service park ranger who was on a deer hunting trip in Alaska. While in the woods a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded a 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear, dropping it just a few feet away. The bear was still alive so he reloaded and applied a coup de gras.

The bear weighed in at over 1600 lbs (725.75 kg) and was slightly over 14 feet tall (4.25 meters) tall standing on his hind legs. This makes it the largest grizzly bear ever recorded. To put this into perspective this means that the bear standing on its hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and look over the roof at eye level. Game Department rules prevent him from keeping it so it will be mounted and put on display at the Anchorage airport.

Later investigation show that this bear had killed 2 other people with the last being a hiker killed 3 days before the encounter with the park ranger. The Forest Service found his .38 revolver empty. The victim fired 6 shots at the grizzly hitting him 4 times. All together they found seven 7mm Magnum and four .38 caliber bullets in the bear. Obviously the .38's were not sufficient to bring down such an animal. The 7mm has about 10 times the energy of a .44 mag and the .38 is a toy compared to the .44 mag.

Ah yes. Close enough to true:

Do photographs show an enormous bear killed by an Alaskan hunter?
