  • Disney revolt....

    Drudge Report

Walt Disney Co. Vice Chairman Roy E. Disney submitted his resignation from the company board on Sunday and called for Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner to step down from his own positions, the WALL STREET JOURNAL is reporting.

Disney, nephew to the late Walt Disney, sent Eisner a three-page letter severely criticizing his leadership during the past seven years:

'It is my sincere belief that it is you who should be leaving and not me,... Accordingly, I once again call for your resignation or retirement.'

WSJ reporter Bruce Orwall writes that in his letter Disney said that Eisner deserved credit for a successful first decade after taking the helm at Disney in 1984. But he then detailed seven areas in which he said Mr. Eisner has failed the company in the past seven years.

The list of complaints included everything from the performance of the struggling ABC broadcast networks and Disney theme parks to Mr. Eisner's reputation for "micro-management of everyone around you."

The resignation comes in advance of a Disney board meeting this week. Mr. Disney's letter seems to indicate that the Disney board's nominating committee had decided to leave his name off the slate of directors to be elected for the coming year. Mr. Disney also indicated that he would also resign from his position as chairman of Disney feature animation.

A Disney spokeswoman initially declined to comment.

    DEVELOPING HARD...
IMO it's about damned time Eisner quit.....

Yeah, kind of interesting. That report leaves out though that Disney has already resigned from the board once before, in a failed takeover I believe.

The Disney family wants Eisner OUT.

He has done nothing good for the company in the past 10 years.

The last time we went to Disney world it was almost NOT fun, the magic was just gone - mostly due to Eisner's horrific ... micromanagement ... of everything.

I don't like Disney anyway.. they were greatly responsible for the new extended copyright periods, for instance. They slaughter fairy tales and make their own twisted versions from and of them.

I liked Fantasia though And they bring us the great, great, great Pixar movies.

That's mainly because of Eisner's big business, money grubbing, micromanaged mindset. People have been calling for Eisner's resignation for years, but he controls the company and the board too well. I hope the board ousts him.

Pixar is technicolorly NOT Disney. When Pixar was young, and only did commercials, Steve Jobs (yes, the Apple man owns Pixar) decided to move Pixar in a new direction since their animation software and artists were so far ahead of their own time. But Steve didn't have the means to distribute and finance a feature lengthe movie, so he signed a 5 (or 7, can't remember) film deal with Disney. Disney produces and distributes for Pixar, but they control extremely little of the creative and artistic aspects of the movie (the only real rule is that they have to be kid friendly enough to be branded under the Disney name).

I believe that the Disney contract is up after 2 more movies, and that their 2006/7 movie will be the first non-Disney branded Pixar movie. Steve Jobs has already signed off on the story of the first non-Disney labeled movie and it is in pre-production.

And from the looks of it, Pixar is not looking to renew their contract with Disney. IF Pixar does not renew their contract with Disney and Eisner is still around, I think that will be the nail in Eisner's coffin.

Oh, I didn't know that. How long has he been around then? (must be really long)

I know that Pixar doesn't belong to disney, and I am glad that they don't, or they'd lose their personality. I'm just glad that Disney distribute Pixar (and enact so little control), because that guarantees big audiences for them, giving them the chance to raise their brand awareness and in the end become independant. AFAIK, Steve Jobs not only owns pixar, but founded it when he left apple.

Incorrect-o. The founder of Pixar was none other than ... THE Master Jedi himself, Mr. George Lucas. Lucas sold Pixar to Mr. Jobs in the early/mid 1980's. Mr. Lucas says he sold it because he didn't have the time to run yet another company and at the time Pixar was just a CG research house for ILM, so he just moved his research to ILM and sold Pixar off to Steve Jobs.

Actually Jason it's 7 years, not 10... thought you had 100% cognitive skillz

Walter P. Gold, Disney board member has resigned his post over this power feud late today.

Hope whatever the outcome it doesn't affect the other half's potential for either senior account manager or senior reservations manager position she's hoping to get.

No, 10 is about right. He's been in that chair for 19 years, and the articles/radio bits seem to agree that he did great things for the first decade, but the latter half has been awful.

Then I'm really glad Lucas sold Pixar. The CG in Episode II was SO bad (and not because of lacking technology).

                        And the Hulk was worse.

I think ILM is going to the dogs.
