  • Sound proofing whats best.

Building the wall out and leaving an air gap.

Building the wall out filling the gap with more sound proofing material.

Theres about an inch of sound proofing material on the wall already bar the chimney which I'm going to treat and block this weekend.

Double row of studs with at least an inch of airspace between them. Under no circumstances should one wall touch the other. Fill the spaces between the studs with sound absorptive foam blocks, cover interior wall with deadening board underneath the sheetrock, cover exterior wall with plexiglass and then face with insulated concrete block. This should work.

Roxul / Rockwool is supposed to be excellent as a sound proofer

Not really. It ameliorates some of the highs, but mid to low frequencies are passed through walls mostly by tympanic effect. Rockwool is a particularly nasty substance as well. Forget the idea that batts of insulation have a real effect.. what you want is a barrier of air between two hard surfaces. Studs transmit sound from one side of the wall to the other.

And you should still have plenty of room for the mother-in-law in there, too.

Option three nick a bulldozer and run it through the neighbours house.

It's going to be a good test of my bodge itself skills. Wish the damn walls were striaght theres about a half inch run out on them. Theres a builder who's good but is as about reliable as the english weather. It would take months to get done.
