I have a theory.
Todays cars are UGLY because of the over use of CAD.
By the time they have done enough CAD work to produce a model they have invested so much in a particular design that it it is too late to change.
Or, they don't bother to make a model at all.
To me most of these cars look like expanded Match Box toys.
The image on the screen just does not reflect what the car will really look like because of perspective.
My 2¢ anyway.

I feel it's a 2 fold problem:

1) Money grubbing execs ... big shocker that would be my #1. Boxy, plastic cars are cheaper to build that metal curved ones. Thus you see a lot of cars with 'planar' designs and such that curve only at the front and the back, but the rest of the car is pretty boxy.

2) Contemporary design. Contemporary art is always considered stylish, so why not design cars contemporarily. Or take an old design and put a new 'contemporary' spin on it. You get new and nostalgia all at once.

Ummm, no that Shelby is FAR uglier than the new 7 (and I don't much care for the 7). The new 5 series is gorgeous, the Z4 is so-so (looks GREAT with an ACS body kit), and yeah the new 6 series is a pile of steaming poop, as is the X3. Having to choose (based on looks) between that Shelby and a new 6 is like deciding which limb you want to saw off with a hacksaw. It's ALL bad.
