  • Happy 20th Birthday, Mac

    The Mac Turns 20

Some of you like to turn your nose up at it, but 20 years ago it introduced to the world at large the type of computing environment we take for granted today. Hard to believe it was so long ago..

And to think, with the exception of a color screen and a hard disk, it's essentially exactly the same machine as it was 20 years ago!

And to think, with the exception of catching up by becoming just like the Mac, MSFT PCs have remained essentially the same, too. That's the point.. the Mac really was a revolution. It's a testament to how right they got it that it has not changed significantly since then.

It _was_ a revolution. It is no longer.

Tell that to Bill Gates. He's the current pirate in charge.

Really, certain things attain maturity as a concept. After that, it's all refinement. The automobile, the refridgerator, etc. They are tools, they do their job well, and that's that.

                    Yeah, sort of great.

It's the Mac-paradigm version of BSD.

Nothing is configurable. You have to move heaven and earth to get a command console, only to discover that all the configuration files are locked. Pfffft.

You know, YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO MEDDLE WITH THE OS. There will be a day when people won't notice that computers have an OS, just as they don't notice that a CD player has a firmware.

Yeah, when Trusted Computing becomes reality just thinking about the internal workings of a computer will be punishible by neuralizing.

Not needing to use the command console is feature not a problem..

Well I'm happy they got a good gui OS up and running, and gave MS a good template to follow, because if they hadn't we would still be using the "console" now (MS DOS 2000)

Too bad they are so expensive. And no, for most of you they aren't expensive in comparison (basically, take any Mac price from US, multiply by 2 and you'll be close to its price here - that's what I call expensive). I would definetely like to own one of current Macs...
