Sorry Guchi and Lambo, this isn't about cars (When did we become a car forum, anyway?)

But if you liked the computer game Diablo, I've just stumbled upon a game that's almost as much fun as Diablo 1 (that is to say, much better than Diablo 2), and the first episode is even FREE!

Shadow Flare. You can download the first Episode there for free, and buy the other three, if you want to. You can also download an item list there, but that destroys the fun, IMHO.

AFAIK, "Dungeon Siege" was concieved as a 'Diablo killer'.

I only tried the DS demo, and didn't like it. IIRC, the game basically played itself, there was really no point in playing.

That said, Diablo II is a prime example of how not to do hack'n'slay games.

Why is it that people don't like D2? I thought it was a fantastic game. There are mods for D2 you can download that make it more D1 like. Eastern Sun is one that comes to mind. It's in the D2 world, but everything is modified to make the gameplay more fun.

D2 was poo. I played for like 24 solid hours before realizing that I wasn't enjoying myself nearly as much as I did with D1.

However, I _loved_ Darkstone, which WAS a Diablo-killer.

Darkstone was great. Perfect 3D engine, ran on a 4meg Card, only drawback was a little too easy.

              Wish they had sequels.

^^ IMO it's too linear game to enjoy it.

Walk the only possible path, talk to NPC, who says same stuff every time and kill anyone who isn't NPC you can talk to.

The only nonlinear part are the items, but then 0.003% proabability you'll get magefist gloves or some other item that will beef up your Sorceres is a bit discouraging.

After playing for 24h I just downloaded character editor, tried a few beefed up characters with proper items and that was it.

Even Morrowind, which is more nonlinear and did I mention graphics, got boring after a while.

And it did a good job at that, if you can even compare the two games.

Now, you should remember Westwood's attempt with NOX, since they aggressively promoted it as a Diablo 2 killer when D2 wasn't even out

I like Crossfire myself Too bad they need some really great artists (I couldn't draw to save my life, otherwise I'd lend a hand) It's kind of like Diablo meets Ultima Online, meets Gauntlet.... Very Diabloesque, can have up to 200 per server....

Crossfire is an open source, cooperative multiplayer graphical RPG and adventure game.

Anyone besides me ever played this? If I had more time, I'd play it more... but well...we all know how that goes..

Nox was a fun game. It was one of the few fantasy games were a high level warrior could go head to head with a high level magic person and not get trounced! Very well balanced game.

Bleh. I can't remember why but I hated Nox. Oh yes, it was that it was too darn easy. I mean, it was a great concept, but it was very poorly executed. I know, I'm a stickler for great games. I appreciate it when a small unknown company comes out with an interesting concept, and I _really_ cheer when they manage to survive long enough to produce sequels that realize the potential of the concept (Blue Orb with their "Settlers" games comes to mind).
