Very few amps, by the way, can truly double their output like this. Most will be, say,

    200w@8 ohms
    325w@4 ohms
    400w@2 ohms
    not rated@1 ohm

or some such. These are still very good amps, too.. much more than the average wife would allow.

The Omegas there are one of the few..

    500w@8 ohms
    1000w@4 ohms
    2000w@2 ohms
    4000w@1 ohm

But I would like to hear the Halcro offering as well. It would be nice if they had the same sort of current capacity, though.

One other thing... you don't know how much an amplifier is putting out based on the Volume (attentuator) control setting.

I've always prefered an amplifier with greater Dynamic Headroom and a power rating double of what the speakers can handle. Reason is that while most amps produce a linear levels and are limited as to what their peaks are based either on it's current capacity (low frequency) or voltage rails (high frequency) allowing music to pass into an amplifier at high levels will clip the signal. Once clipping occurs huge amounts of high frequency distortion is produced often time either damaging the mid/HF drivers or your ears because the appearant power levels have effectively increased ten fold or more.
Speakers on the other hand are very dynamic devices which typically handle "peaks" 10x greater than rated power without much fuss as long as it's not sustained.

Bob Caver years ago had a simple example of how this point is driven home to the customer... a single snip of sizzors requires ~2000 watts of power to reproduce accurately without clipping.

Speakers and amplifiers together form a system. Often a very good speaker is a complete waste without a very good amplifier. For example, I have heard B&W Nautilus 801s which sounded weak and awful because they were being driven by only(!) a 200wpc Adcom power amp. This amp falls into the first category I listed above in post #31. It just doesn't have the guts to drive a large, demanding loudspeaker like an 801. Most speakers would be quite happy with this level of power, though.

Mr KvH , what do you think of non Hi-Fi Professional power amps e.g. Crown or Crest that are used on PA's etc.

Never seem to see direct comparisons between. Professional cd's players used in broadcast e.g. Tascam and Denon compared to High ish end Hi-Fi players.

The reason is they are built for different purposes. PA speakers usually use horn drivers and are very efficient, but lack when fine details are needed. The amps driving them need to deliver lots of power, but not necessarily lots of detail. That being said, I have seen Crown amps in high-end shops (I admit this is longer ago than I would like to admit, but still, they aren't junk, just built with different priorities in mind.)

The Adcom amp didn't live up to the requirements because what I outlined in post 30 and 32

Honestly tho, if amplifiers lived upto their marketing hype putting them together as a synergistic system would be a no brainer

another interesting aspect that is often never mentioned and overlooked is the distortion specs @1w output... where most music is played at. The higher end amps typically blow the competition away in this regard and also one of the reason why headphone amps are so expensive... they excel in this aspect.

Halcro dm58's run $35k per pair (they are monoural, i.e. only amplify a single channel per amp). The step up, dm68's, run around $40k a pair

                    OK, I can do that........NOT!

Another thing, I sometimes see Amps specced as, say, 2x25W Class A and 2x95W Class AB. How does that work, does it switch automatically or something?
