Should these TV programmes be allowed?

1) Sky TV: There's something about Muriel...tv series in which several blokes compete for the affections of a gorgeous bird..except she's a bloke!!!

2)Sky TV: programme in which contestants have to convince their family and friends for a week that they have won the lottery.

In my opinion, both stink, and I'm sure they have more where they came from

I'm not going to vote. After all, you don't have to watch them. Personally I doubt you'd ever find me or any of my acquaintances taking part in one of these things... but I am not about to dictate what can and cannot be shown. Will simply turn off.

Sure you can turn off (and if you have Sky you can find 99 other things to watch) but to me it's a worrying trend. Both of the examples I gave are, to varying degrees, all about humiliation.
What's next "let's see if he'll eat this pie when it contains dog shit"?

Sure - I'd have to agree that ads before the watershed might not be such a good idea. But after that, free reign as far as I care.

in 1) the blokes are humiliated in the end
in 2) the families of the contestant are humiliated, or at the very lest severely disappointed and the relationship potentially ruined.

Yes of course I am. But it is the blokes' problems. The families are just unfortunate collateral damage.

If one of my family was to do that sort of thing to us, they would be put straight into a padded cell and looked after by the people in white coats. For the rest of their lives .

I feel the same about Jackass. That show is just so NOT funny....

when they walk around with a baby (doll) though pretend it's a real alive kid, and throw it onto the ground and stuff, as well as putting on a car roof and drive off. Makes me really angry when I see that...

the problem is wether you should apply censorship or not to television programmes, and to which degree. they _used_ to rely on 'good taste', or at least what channels dared to air without feeling too ashamed. Seems like there's no shame at all any more to what to broadcast and what not..

Well, this idea we seem to delude ourselves with is complete bunk. Only half of who we are is that individual. The other half is a member of a society. A society that is sucking more and more. When others pollute this half of me I do get offended. You will have to deal with people who got their value system from watching this crap, you know. Young people will form their individualities with this stuff as an input, as well. The future does not look good.

All this wouldn't be such a big problem if parents would properly raise their children. But some can't and many just think that working and leaving the kid with a babysitter or leaving education to kindergarten is somehow "better" than to look after the kids yourself. Of course, society demands this behaviour - if a single mother decides to look after her two year old child instead of working and leaving the child with god-knows-whom, she is told by people that she is antisocial. And the government is complaining that people don't have enough kids. Their solution? All-day schools. So that both parents can go to work and don't need to raise their children themselves. And then they wonder why nothing good becomes of this generation.

@Az - I think that's a whole different argument entirely.

Both of my children have gone to 'kindergarten' or day-nursery as we call it, mostly on a part-time basis. They benefit enormously from it. It (ours at least) is a loving, caring, enriching environment where the children benefit greatly from interaction with other children and adults, and ultimately get far more individual attention than is possible when managing a busy home.

Our youngest attends 3 days a week, while my wife works. We don't make a lot of financial profit out of that arrangement, but wifey gets to stay sane (and in a profession) and Adam gets 3 days quality care from the nursery and 4 days quality care from us each week.

My eldest goes to an after-school club for ~1 hour on those 3 days, and really enjoys it, again getting a range of experiences that he perhaps wouldn't otherwise. He's not suffering in any way and still gets to spend a good deal of time with us.

Obviously I do agree that those children who "wake, eat, school, home, eat, bed" aren't being treated fairly by parents though. It's as if the children are an inconvenience to them.
