Boston went all non smoking a few months ago. Can actually breathe in the bars and clubs now and not stink afterwards, it rocks.

Even though I'm not a smoker, I think such a rule sucks...part of the charm of a pub is the clouds of smoke drifting around the place. I mean, really, if you want to drink a Coke, you can just drink it in a McDonald's, by being in a pub with intent to consume alcohol people should not mind a different (legal) habit such as smoking.

Excuse me? How does drinking alcohol mean I shouldn't mind smoking?

Alcohol consumption is totally voluntary. I control my personal intake rate, and do not expose other people to my drinking, or the hazards thereof.

Smoking is: bad for your lungs, makes you age, and stink, and stain. Being around smokers causes many of these things.

If you go to a bar and choose not to drink, then you get none of the ill effects of over-indulging in alcohol. If you go to a smoky bar and don't smoke, then you still end up with most of the negative aspects of smoking.

People who get drunk in a bar cause noise and are general asses to everyone around them...that to me is more of a discomfort than smoke floating around the room.

And come on, let's not discuss the cons of smoking versus the cons of alcohol, smoking a couple of cigarettes on a night out does not do any real damage to your lungs just as drinking with moderation does not damage your liver. If we're to discuss excess, alcohol is just as bad, if not worse than, smoking. As for the fact that smoking makes one stink...last time I checked beer also gives u bad breath, smelly sweat, etc.

I think having smoking and non-smoking sections in a bar is OK, but banning smoking completely from such a place seems like a shitty idea. In an office building, people have the right not to be exposed to smoke or alcohol-related annoyances, but when you go to a bar, you go for the express purpose of satisfying some kind of petty vice-be it related to alcohol, women or smoking.

Didn't they try this before with the Prohibition? Everybody enjoyed that one, didn't they?

Isn't that like having a no-pissing section in a swimming pool?

More rubbish. I go to a bar firstly to socialise and secondly to drink. Wombat is right - there's no reason I should put up with the detritus of other peoples habits just because I want to socialise.

Yeah non smoking sections always made me laugh, because the 'seperation' between them is usually just an invisible line drawn around some tables.

Oh come now, it worked just fine in a lot of restaurants, airports, etc. before they decided to limit the available space to a 2x2 box with no ventilation in which 10+ people are trying to cram in.

Quite frankly, "socialising" groups with a few beers in 'em that are loud enough so that you can't even carry a normal conversation at the next table are the main reason why a lot of bars suck. It's just a matter of personal taste-you hate lung-choking smokers, I hate loud drunkards. In any case, I seriously doubt people can get second-hand smoking related diseases from going to the pub a couple of nights every week.

I simply can't find a logical argument to support this law, humans have their vices and if they're banned in one place, they'll just pursue them in another. The desired effect is that people will quit smoking...the more likely effect if this rule is enforced is that more and more bars will close down for lack of clientele.

It's amazing you find drunk people in a pub. I'm shocked.
Smoking in pubs doesn't bother me much. Smoking funny fags annoys me as now the law is so weak on that a lot of people do it openly.

                        Smoking annoys me.

If Im visiting people that smoke - its perfectly OK with me. IM visiting THEM.

People visiting me smoke outside. Its perfectly OK, they are visiting me.

WHen I go someplace and am expected to pay for services - I dont want to be faced with the smell or the feel of smoking.
Its perfectly OK, thats my money.

When I visit somewhere public - I own a part of it. Its payed by some of my money. I dont want to be faced with the smell or the feel of smoking.
Its perfectly OK, thats my money.

But hey - what about the taxpaying smokers? Right. THey are just saving up for their hospital bills. They prop. cant read a book anyway - what are they doing at the library???

Well, bars are private property, so I don't see why the bar-owner should not be allowed to allow smoking. If you don't like it, go to a non-smoking bar. If you can't find one, START ONE! (FT: a way to get rich? )

Hospital bills from smokers are lower. Once we get diagnosed with lung-cancer, it is mostly to late to do anything and we die quickly thereafter. Sometimes we simply drop dead *snap* just like that from a heart attack. We die younger, having drawn pension payments far shorter, which is why your pension premiums are lower. And, in some countries, like mine, cigarettes are heavily taxed on top of all that.
