In the long run, higher gas prices will help....to create alternatives to automotive transport and to encourage local production...

€ 1.1332 per liter (for super unleaded 95+).
That is US$ 1.3742 per liter, and this was a discount price.

Right now ranging from 8.00 dkr (1.25$) to 9.00 dkr (1.42$) pr litre, depending on where I buy. We recently had a regular price war on gas, making prices drop quite low, but they now seem to have gone up again... with a veangence (sp?).

The only good part about having a 60 Km drive to work is that when it's expensive in my home town it's often cheap in the town where I work and vice versa.

Well, there's a can of worms to open.

As a benevolent dictator of my Fantasyland, I would, over a period of 5 years, phase out all private cars with a consumption higher than 4 l/100 km (60 miles/US gal), starting with the oldest. Most cars (except, perhaps, some tiny ones) would therefore be replaced by hybrids.

I would also not permit the import of hydrogen-powered cars. Hydrogen, as a motor fuel, is a distinct no-no and Mr Schwarzenegger's move in CA is environmentally bad!!!

Only problem is that you would have a hard time prying the fingures off the steering wheel of SUV drivers in the US

The other problem I see also is that anything that gets 60 MPG with a gas engine is just wayyy too small for the US market. They would work in a City type envorment, but the US is more spread out then Europe
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

That's why I would make it mandatory in my benevolent dictatorship (call it Hell )

Not really. I agree not to full-size SUV gas-guzzler standard. However, the Toyota Prius (and I understand the GM hybrid which will be launched shortly) has similar space and performance as a mid-sized car and will get better than 60 mpg, even in town driving.

Not really, the USA is 9,529,063 km2 (including Alaska and Hawaii) while Europe is estimated at 23,032,135 km2. I'll grant you that you are very slightly more likely to hit someone in Europe which has a population density of 31 persons/km2, as opposed to 30.7 in the USA. If you were to motor from Lisbon to Murmansk(~50° difference of longitude, ~32° of latitude), I would suggest that it's longer than Boston to San Diego or Seattle to Miami (~45° difference of longitude, ~20° of latitude).

I agree with Brian here, Oz has a population of about 2people/km2. While (considering gas price in Oz) there are a few insane people who do the SUV thing, most people use medium sized cars, even for interstate traveling which is usually a distance of >800 miles.

While I agree some people need SUV's or equiv vehicals for work etc. the average person does not.

In general I think people in the US have longer commutes to work and to go shopping etc.
Oh and whats wrong with Hydrogen as a fuel? Its 0 emissions, and depending on how it is processed in the first place should require much less energy than existing oil distillation.
