  • New diabetes treatment?

    This goes to show that you can never tell where the next disease treatment will come from. This time for diabetes and from the kitchen;

    New Scientist article....

Original article: Diabetes Care (vol 26, p 3125)

Other studies show that cinnamon also kills e. coli and salmonella....two major sources of food poisoning

Neat idea.. it would be pretty simple to add cinnamon to everyone's diet.

One of the contributing factors as to why we are all getting fatter and less healthy might be the breakdown of good sense nutritional traditions being passed from mother to daughter as women now seek careers other than homemaking. A lot of "old wives" wisdom got through common sense and hard experience has turned out to be reproven as valid by modern science, it seems. This might have been one of the secrets forgotten or neglected in modern times.

or alternatively you could do as I did, and learned from my mother, so I could actually take care of myself. I see no reason that a woman should be barefoot, pregnant and chained to the kitchen sink. I am quite capable of preparing food

              Welcome back Dr M

We can see who has ben googleing about diabetes M.

Hope it is under control/ and stays that way.

Why dont we genetically modify the cinnamon to have more ant-oxident properties - then it would make one live longer.... we could call it SPICE

                As for cinnamon?
Sure! I mean, who would use it because of its taste?

                  Yes, Welcome Back Dr.!

                  As for genetically modifying..
Danish researchers have made a breakthrough in isolating some of the active ingredients in Garlic.

Field trials shows this to be more (much more) efficient than penincilin ever was - and because of its effect, more or less impossible for bacteria to develop resistance against.

(It works by blocking the "attack coordination" signals given off by the bacteria - without reciving these signals bacteria will not enter their patogene fase. And since the bacteria themselves doesnt "see" the Garlic deriviate, thier ability to develop counterstrategies are diminished greatly).

I think they are planning to incooperate the Garlic vector into common yeast and then manufacture it like any other pharmaceutical.

Cool Duke - I LOVE GARLIC

                    Toasted
                    Raw
                    Fried

                    doesnt matter

On cinnimon - you can use it chilli - it adds a sweetness that perfectly complements the bite..... In fact it almost acts as salt - enhancing the bite too.....

                    Love it

Put cinnamon in my chili and I'll smack ya. Gag me with spoon nasty.
It borks the flavor and does not taste like salt was added, not in the slightest.

Funny how strongly I'm against it... this kid will eat just about anything, but that's one mixture I refuse to touch.

But is good in a varieties of other foods. I normally buy resturant sized containers.

Other good spices and herbs are Cloves, Cilantro and it's seed Corriander. For both antibacterial properties and rich antioxidants.

Sadly mentioning healthy attributes of any specific natural product like cinnamon will drive up prices significantly along with devistating the rainforsts of Central and South America in the process.

You don't have to taste the cinnamon to get the benefit. Just buy it powdered and put it in gelatin capsules, which you can get about anywhere. All you need is a few mg. a day.

Personally I LOVE CINNAMON!! Put it in my applesauce, on baked apples and even sprinkle it on my toast.

A large number of modern medicines are based on natural chemicals. Just look at aspirin and all it's benefits then consider that it comes from willow bark. Many heart meds originated in plants. Ex: digitalis comes from foxglove. Then there are the major benefits of garlic, tomatos etc. etc. etc.

Animal chemicals are also commonly used in medicine. One of course is insluin and other blood factors. Another example is the blood of horseshoe crabs. Their blue blood contains Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL). This is highly prized by drug manufacturers who use it to detect bacterial contamination in their products.
Next-gen antibiotics are likely to come from such sources as Komodo Dragons. Their blood contains a factor that immunizes them from their own saliva, which contains a witches brew of toxin producing bacteria. Their septic bite can kill in very short order.

Similar research is underway involving snake blood and their venom, honeybees (betcha didn't know that honey is both bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal), sharks, salamanders and frogs.

Some of this will come under the heading of lost knowledge. Egyptians were treating wounds sucessfully with honey 4,000 years ago but much of the world had to wait for Dr. Lister and decades later pennicillin to get decent wound care

I grew up around Cincinnati, Ohio where they are famous for their chili ....key ingredient.... CINNAMON. So i've done that for years and love it.

btw...will have to tell my dad about cinnamon helping with diabetes...he just found out that he's borderline, they are trying to control it with diet. Anything that might help. Thanks, DrM.
