Unfortunately this article doesn't try to explain what exactly an acceleron consists of (quarks? or is it an elementary particle like an electron?).
However the dark energy question is far from being answered, don't forget there's a theory about the universal constant too, basically explaining the same (at the same moment, ideally you could look at the universe for some hundreds of thousand years to see the real development and to be able to falsify 1 of the 2 theories).
