OK, bad guess!! The mountains are obviously oldish, possibly Jurassic limestone? It would seem they are in Europe. Am I correct with ex-Warsaw Pact? Am not very familiar with the geology of that region, but I would guess they are at least 2000 m high from the vegetation, unless they are fairly well North. How about, as another guess, the Urals?
Are you sure the origeny isn't Hercynian, rather than Caledonian? If so, my next suggestion would be the Bohemian massif. Certainly, from what I can see, the topography would fit that kind of formation (the same as the Black Forest I mentioned earlier)??? As far I can make out, I can't find any other Caledonian origeny in E. Europe than Holy Cross.
