  • Is it UK? That looks rather like a good old Ford Transit minibus.

    • Yes, it's in the UK.

      • As that has not helped, apparently, I'll narrow it down by saying I lived my childhood about three hundred metres from this building and that I was educated in Scotland (it is not a school though, to ensure that I mislead no one).

        • There seems to be a flag on one of the poles; not a Scottish or UK one though.

US one? Consulate in Edinbourgh? (hard to find how it looks...)

          Royal Navy one?

          • Don't know about the flag. Theoretically, it could be from any of many nations and I don't think that this is likely to be of help, although the presence of the flagpoles themselves may be a small help. It is not consular or anything like that. As the building dates from the pre-motorised era, the main doorway and its size/shape may give a clue as to its original purpose, which is still, to some extent, valid.

            Edinburgh? Yes!

            • Well, in light of that hints I'd guest old main postal building or train station or local "East India" company hq, however I can't find any matching photos...

              • Sorry, wrong on all counts! It is not in central E'bro but about 5 km out, so is unlikely to be administrative. You may also care to think of the purpose of the large area of tarmac between the building and the gate. I would estimate it to be about 2 ha in area. Hardly a 19th century car park!!!!

                  • Yes indeed, I used to live at 262 Colinton Road and when I was a kid, I used to go down there to watch the cavalry exercises on the big parade ground. The doorway is big enough to allow a mounted troop, 4 abreast, to ride through to the stables at the back. Although it is used now for non-cavalry purposes, in July and August it houses the visiting armies, sometimes cavalry, to participate in the very spectacular Edinburgh Military Tattoo, on the sidelines of the Edinburgh International Festival. If you YouTube Edinburgh Military Tattoo, you will find hundreds of excerpts some of which are very impressive. It takes a lot of pulmonary stamina to play the doodlesac for 10 minutes while marching!!!

I love Edinburgh, having been there many times on business and pleasure. I haven't actually witnessed the tattoo (other than on TV) though as it gets rather expensive to be in Edinburgh at that time.
