Bill Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital for what sounds like emergency heart bypass surgery. VERY few details at this point.

Politics aside lets say one for him and his family.

UPDATE:

He's had chest pains for several days. Apparently he's already had an angioplasty in the past few days and it didn't work, so the decision was made to admit him to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital; one of the top heart centers in the US.

He's going to have an angiogram (inject dye into the heart blood vessels then take x-ray movies) and then he'll likely have a bypass.

Risks:

Some during the angiogram because of fluid shifts or potential heart arrythmias. Allergic reaction to the dye is unlikely since he's had an uneventful anginoplasty, which involves much the same procedure.

The surgical risk is the same as for most other long procedures. About 8% have anesthesia reactions of some degree, mostly minor.

The physical stresses of having your chest cracked makes it a bit more risky than other surgeries, but open heart at a major center has become pretty routine.

There is, however, some risk of throwing clots post-op. This can cause complications like stroke or blood clots to the lungs, but they're pretty rare.
