One of the reason more don't die in SW/Central Ohio is due in part bacause of the Air Raid/EWS sirens placed all around the area due to the proximity to Wright Patterson AFB.

Now called the EAS, they'd fire off the sirens at the drop of a hat. Do remember many times a year running through the paces at school just in case there was a tornado or a nuclear attack due to the ongoing Cold War.

Me too, the only tornado I've seen was very mild one that moved across the east side of Wichita, and even then the only thing I could see while peeking out of the backdoor (which opens up to the stairway going to both the kitchen and the basement) and past trees and houses in the residental neighborhood was a vaguely defined white "cloud" with ragged white clouds all around it. Heck, the only way I could be sure it was an actual tornado was that it had some debris in it.

        Our sirens are for tornadoes.
Our TV stations have radar so good they can tell you what street the funnel is on.
That is why we can have almost 2,000 homes turned to matchsticks and only lose 45 people.
        I't s Serious business here.

I'm refering to 30-40 years ago

Of course there are the latest Nexrad doppler radars now (actually for quite a few years)

Let me add, we had radars then, lots of them, being the Silicon Valley til about 1960. Actually living in such proximity to Wright Pat, our small town by the 1960 census was the most industrialized city in the US per populous. Most o my friends father were engineers working there on all kinds of ultra secret stuff.

The weather radar here has 9 times the resolution of nexrad.

Oh my mistake... Doppler 9000, both WTHR and NOAA out of Indianapolis have them.. about a mile apart too

Florida has them... there is at least one in Orlando and another in Miami

Ohio has many covering the entire stare along with Indiana and down south in Kentucky... we are also part of Tornado Alley
