    Sky Captain and the World of bad CG

    Apparently the film makers realized too late that the CG was really dorky and tried to hide it by applying a soft focus filter to the entire movie. "Old" movies might be grainy and everything, but this movie's horridly blurry.

    At least it had a new trailer for The Incredibles which is looking pretty cool.

      Did you see the movie? I saw the newer traillers and the CGI looked better.
      Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

          2 things the way I see. 1) they are trying to make the CG look retro 50's, like they are models or something from an old movie. 2) CG on the tube never looks as good as CG on the big screen. I've noticed the latter a lot as CG becomes more prevalent.

            The styles are "Art Deco" and "Art Deco Transportation", which was popular from the 20's to the 40's.

            The filter isn't an overall 'blur' but one that videographers call "film look". It's often applied to CG and digital video to antialias the edges and blend pixelized areas, which occur no matter how good the rendering engine.

            CG on the tube has to conform to the NTSC/PAL color bandwidth limitations while film can show a full palette.

            Neither can show color saturations higher than about 235 (R, G or B; but it looks worst in red) and NTSC cannot legally display blacks with a staturation lower than 16/16/16. At least PAL gets to use SuperBlack (0/0/0).

            Digital projectors also don't have to conform to the broadcast limitations and can show a full palette.

              I'll not comment on the "style" of the art as that's more of a personal thing, but the post-processing effect they did is terrible looking. Here's an example of what it looks like applied to a much better movie:
