GL is a flip flopper. I've seen him on interviews saying that he wouldn't release any of the movies to DVD until after the entire series was complete because he wasn't convinced that DVD was a good enough platform and wanted to see if something better would emerge.
I'm sure that once the final movie is out he's going to release several "this is the ultimate version" editions until the fans just refuse to buy anymore.
He's also said that he won't allow any more star wars movies to be made, but I'm sure that he'll change his mind on that too.
Originally posted by leech To be a little fair on the "Han shoots first" thing.... the actual novel of Star Wars simply states that there is some some blasters fired and smoke filled the area... or something to that effect. It never actually said who shot first.
As far as a lot of the other edits... why couldn't he just do what Stargate did... it had the choice on the DVD if you wanted to watch the theatrical release or the special edition with deleted scenes. It'd be much better than forcing (pun not intended) us all to watch the changed one. Not to mention he could have just released it with a commentary saying, "well, originally I wanted this a different way...." Or something.. He could have easily had the original and the special edition on the same disks.

Exactly. He's just an ****ole. Anyone who destroys an icon of cinema history is an ****ole. I don't care if he was the original writer/director or not.
So I was sitting there thinking about this.... well, specifically that he had the actor who played Jango Fett redo the few lines that Boba Fett had.... well, shoudn't they also have redone the voices for the stormtroopers, since they too are also all clones of Jango Fett?

Yeah, speaking of quality, you want to see something that would be reminiscent of the orignal quality? Put in the bonus feature disk and look at the original teaser! Very similar to the original teaser of Alien. Very different from the way the trailers and teasers of today look.

I hate today's trailers. They show all the best scenes, and tell you the entire story in 30 seconds. You don't even have to go watch the movie, as the rest is just filler.
That only shows that some movies plain SUCK. Fight Club's trailer didn't reveal squat about the movie. Though that is one of the few movies within the first 10 min of it, I knew I was going to buy it on DVD.

Well, I finally saw the DVD of the redone Episode IV tonight. At least he redid the hanger scene so Jabba looks bigger and more realistic and doesn't have Roger Rabbit googly eyes like the 1997 theatrical redo. The attack on the death star had better effects but worse pacing.. it lost me there for a second. There are still matte squares around the TIE fighters during the attack on the Falcon though.. I can't believe they didn't fix something so simple as that.. I still don't like all that crap passing in front of the speeder in Mos Eisley, or the modified shootout with Greedo.. the pacing in the original was perfect, and produced a great reaction.. that's kinda gone now.
Ironically, the scenes where he threw more technology at it admittedly did look better, but those streaks that were the fighters taking off to attack the death star in the original really grab your imagination more than the highly detailed, slowly moving CGI X-Wings that are there now.
The huge formation of stormtroopers Han now happens upon when he makes that mad dash in pursuit is actually the only thing I think was an improvement over the original, other than the restoration of the original print. Oh, and at least Jabba is done better this time (It was still better for pacing to have kept him out. I liked seeing the Millennium Falcon for the first time as Luke sees it.. we mostly experience this tale from Luke's point of view anyhow, and every time that is gotten away from, the story drifts a bit.)
They're not "matte squares!" They're FORCE-FIELDS! Do you really think Lucas would have permited an actual flaw of that magnitude into the final, true version of his masterpiece?
I can't believe he missed that either. I bought the DVD set and all in all, the trilogy is still as awful as it was originally. The only reason it ever grabbed me was because I was 7 years old. Horrible acting, horrible script, horrible lines delivered by awful actors. Just putrid. When Lucas is finally done with these, they'll get my vote as the 6 worst movies ever made. No wonder Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher died a quick acting death after ROTJ. Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones' voice were the only things that made watching these bearable.
