  • Any dutch speaking guys around here?

I'm currently taking dutch lessons. It all comes pretty easy so far, since I speak both English and German. So basically I understand a lot, but don't speak much yet. But even though it's all still pretty basic stuff, I figure some "listening practice" couldn't hurt right!?

So I've been looking for some dutch music (bands singing in dutch of course) and movies. But it's not easy when you don't know where to look.

So I figured somebody at the mighty MURC would have some recommendations... anything would be much appreciated.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

music? hmmm.. I don't listen to dutch music, but I guess it's pretty easy to 'find' stuff by Marco Borsato or André Hazes.
as for movies: over here, most non-bargain bin DVDs have subtitles for a dozen of european languages, so I guess you can get DVDs with dutch language subtitles (or language tracks if you rent a dutch movie).

How would subtitles help you listening/speaking??

My advice: order stuff at VPRO (broadcasting company, http://www.vpro.nl/winkel/). Documentaries, music, comedy everuthing you might like, spoken in Dutch.

Just don't listen to the music of Flip Kowlier. I mean, it is nice music, but it is in a Belgian dialect which makes it completely incomprehensible for most Dutch-speaking persons.

If you want Dutch subtitles, many DVD's can be usefull... (there rarely is dubbing though)

You may also want to have a look at http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl/

The site features some broadband streams of the Dutch public broadcasters. The "jeugdjournaal" may be a good first bet (news for youngsters, which makes an effort to use "simple" language).

Maybe some music pointers as well (since that's what you were actually asking for)...

http://nederpop.pagina.nl/ lists a few Dutch artists, but it's kinda hard to give recommendations, since I don't know your taste in music.

Some suggestions, based on language (comprehensibility) and availability (I expect those to be available via p2p, ehrm, online ordering):

                          - Acda en De Munnik (male duo, "cute" songs)
                          - Bløf (pop/rock)
                          - De Dijk (pop/rock)
                          - Marco Borsato (middle of the road)
                          - Paul de Leeuw ("cute" songs)
                          - Van Dik Hout (pop/rock)

Not necessarily endorsed in any way ;-), but at least comprehensible and probably available somewhere.
