I would agree it being the last manned fighter developed for the next 20 years or so, if not longer. They are already developing unmanned fighters to do the more dangerous roles that should come into service in another 10 years and at a much cheaper cost then a manned fighter.

As for the military using outdated equipment...why not..if its not broke dont fix it. Shit they still use 286's on the Space Shuttle LOL. I was supporting DEC VAX equpiment running wargame simulations as late as 2003 when they where replaced by a PC based system. The reason? It stupid how much they where paying for replacement parts, when a PC based system was a hell of a lot of cheaper and easier to get parts for.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Next time they should opensource the jet.
Who cares about the tech when the U.S is one of the only economies in the world capable of FUNDING such a project ?

If I have a secret which costs more than you can afford, it's not important whether you know it or not...

Never underestimate how much money a country can divert into its military program. North Korea is a good example.

The first thing I noticed on that page that is the pic in the middle that says "WHATEVER IT TAkES" with that kid holding a flag. And how true it is.

You won't be King of the Hill for long if you just sit on your ass waiting until someone challenges you. The only reason this costed so much is because of the bureaucracy... but we wouldn't have it otherwise!

Very true...the ATF program that begat the F-22 was started in the mid-80's. The newer F-35 JSF was started in the early 90's and the plane will hopefully go into service in 2008, in a much shorter period of time and be much cheaper.

I think a lot of people working within presumably hightech industries could learn from the grafix companies.

30 years time to complete? Try 6 months.

Outsource every single part of the jet.
Design based on 1) shape 2) power 3) armaments 4) electronics.

Then just let everybody start the biddnig. Closing time; 6 months. Production timed; 12 months.

It works for the automobile industri - and dont tell me that a modern car isnt 3 times as technical as that assold plane.

The thing is. Surely after 20 years a better overall design has been thought up.
