About an hour ago I heard on the news that the cannon fired when it was armed in preparation for shooting at the range without the trigger being pulled. IF this is true then it sounds like an electrical failure in the gun controller.
OTOH what kind of MORONS would build a freakin' SCHOOL just 3.5 miles from a G**D**N*D GUNNERY RANGE ????
How can you trust your kids to such people??

What does an accident have to do with war? If a 747 crashes in to a school what are you going to say.?

I mean if USA had more historic experience with war on their soil, they would associate war with suffering, hunger, loos of dear ones, attrocities, rapes, wounded, dead and not with a reason to watch Fox news or CNN instead of reality TV.
And elected leaders would probably come with better ways to boost stagnating economy and increasing of competitiveness than generating goverment spending through war efforts and conquering foreign markets.Last edited by UtwigMU; 6 November 2004, 00:42.

I think that's a bit crass to assume we are like this simply from popular folklore. You had a bloody civil war within your lifetime, but would you really wish that experience upon others? We had ours in the 1860s, and it was devastating. Maybe this is a gap in your historical reading, but the U.S. civil war was in many ways a preview of WWI which tacticians in Europe disregarded to their peril. To advance en masse (as was the practice in the Napoleonic era) upon entreched positions weaponed with modern rifles proved suicidal. Over 600,000 American soldiers on both sides perished in this conflict.

The war in Slovenia fortunately lasted 10 days (31 destroyed or captured Yougoslav tanks, 22 fighting vehicles, 172 transport vehicles, 6 choppers, 45 dead, 146 wounded 4693 POWs. Our side had 19 dead and 182 wounded.
This was due to:
- our superior intelligence and counterintelligence - Yougoslav army was led to expect no resistance and thought it would be walk in the park
- our preparedness: For instance strike of garbage collectors during which Austrian garbage collectors drove garbage away and drove guns in
- immediate blocking of all forces before they exited barracks
- their fear of Armbrust which was a western weapon and overestimated
- Slovenia is ethnically homogenous (no historic claims from other ex Yougoslav nations)
- Unity of nation
But nonetheless being in a bomb shelter at 13 and seing young girl cry because civil defence representative would not let her take her dog in, etc... wasn't a nice experience. (Planes with full ordnance took off in Bosnia, so air raids were sounded, fortunately they were recalled.)
WW2 here on the other hand: The generation of our grandparents was scarred and it's still to an extent a reason for national divide.Last edited by UtwigMU; 6 November 2004, 01:03.

While we may not have had massive property losses and attacks on our homeland (save for the War of 1812, Civil War, Pearl Harbor and 9/11) don't forget that the US sacrificed a s***load of resources and blood in European conflicts that could/should have been prevented.
