They're looking for a way out from going to a country which is led by a leader who has beaten and killed millions.
He's also taken part in the removal and murder of white farmers who provided a lot of food for the country plus other countries in africa.
This has helped cause startvation as well. This is becuase the natives haven't got a clue and with a dead farmer theres no one around to show them how to farm.
Australa and Britain tried to get sanctions against Mugabe but were threatened with expulsion from the commonwealth by black countries as it was declared racist!!!!! Okay sanctions generally don't do anything but the double standards is worrying.
The UN as normally isn't doing at look as it's no doubt not the pc thing to do.

Games should not mix with politics. If someone does not wish to play with someone else or at a particular place, they should be free not to do so without any sanctions, but it should be up to the individuals. As there are thousands of good cricketers in England, it should not be difficult to make up a team of those who have no objections to going. OK, it may not be the strongest team, but de Coubertin said something like it was not winning that counted.
I was not playing a game, but when I was a consultant to the UNEP, I twice refused to visit certain countries for political/conscience reasons and these refusals were accepted and did not prevent me being given mandates to other countries. I was not asked to visit Zimbabwe, but I would have refused there, as well.
As far as Zimbabwe is concerned, the UN has its hands tied. It has generally no mandate to interfere in the internal affairs of a single country unless there is a specific request, especially as Mugabe has been "democratically" elected. The usual reasons for UN intervention is when a country presents a threat to a neighbour or refugees escape to another country in numbers sufficient to constitute a crisis. In other words, it has to be an international problem.Brian (the devil incarnate)

But individual countries can impose sanctions, like prohibiting economic traffic which includes sport events. In the case of Zimbabwe, that should be done as of yesterday.Join MURCs Distributed Computing effort for Rosetta@Home and help fight Alzheimers, Cancer, Mad Cow disease and rising oil prices.

Bullshit the UN could do something if it really wanted and if Mugabe was democratically elected I'll take a baseball bat to the polling booth next elections.
If the UN were to intervene in all countries where there was fraudulent voting, it would be VERY busy, starting with the UK, France, Germnay and the USA.
The UN can't do anything in Ukraine, either, for the same reasons.
I agree with Umf that individual nations can impose sanctions, the same as individual cricketers should have the right to refuse to go there. When footballers baulked at going to Israel, the match was transferred here to Nicosia, but I believe that was more for security than for political reasons. I see no reason why the Zimbabwe cricket cannot be transferred to a neighbouring country.Last edited by Brian Ellis; 25 November 2004, 06:01.Brian (the devil incarnate)

Missed the commas however wheres theres a will theres a way.
The only dodgy voting in Britain I've been aware of was postal voting that can be transferred to any marginal seat. The Tories did this at least once that I'm aware off and the lack of checks with online voting meaning you could have voted twice.

well I think it is an excuse because theres no way Mugabe would let anything happen to the futeball players under any circumstances and im sure there would be heavy security fo the game plus its not like its a week long tourney they play the game in and out.
the UN is impotent beacuse people cant even agree on what constitutes a "genocide" but were quite eager to jump into serbia and then let 100,00 people die a day in Rwanda i think thats where the double standard lies.
personally if it is the players security that is the concern play somewhere else, they've done that before.DFI NFIIUltra 400
