The small spy removing modul in "Advanced System Optimzer" finds things more than other anti-spy software. This is my experience.

Copy email and user data via CD or network to clean box (I don't recommend putting infested machine on LAN). Scan and clear of virii.

Insert XP SP2 slipstreamed CD, set the box to boot from CD, format and reinstall.

Do yourself a favor and run SBS&D and AAW in the safe mode before all that crap loads. it will eliminate the reboot and its back again annoyance.... also use ctl alt del or a process viewer to see whats running and google it if you dont know what it is. On a couple of particlarly bad machines I had to manually delete a lot of suspicious files (random characters.exe) from the windows folder to keep the stuff from taking over a couple weeks later again. This sight here also has all the tools and a good forum for helping people with infested boxes. http://www.majorgeeks.com/

As I hadn't done it for several months, I just updated PestPatrol, which I consider one of the best apps for spyware control and ran it. It found one spyware cookie, put there by a company called Microsoft in Redmond WA, to monitor my use of WMP.

Do all that but it also has a tendancy to find some more after one clean run. Of course if the software doesn't know about the spyware you just get the old crap re-installed.

I like Pest control as well.

I had a machine that was badly infected too, it was running XP Home that was used by five people. I had to log on to each of the Ids to remove everything reported by HiJackThis.

Norton AV, and Firefox keep my system nice and clean.

Norton AV and Firefox cannot keep any system clean without a firewall (I use ZoneAlarm) and an anti-spyware system (I use PestPatrol).

If you don't believe me, download the free PestPatrol, run it and tell us all, if you dare, how many items of spyware, adware etc., etc. it detects. I think you will be more surprised than us.

Perhaps chickens don't go into pron much hence the clean machine.
