Well the Friday after Thanksgiving is the offical start of the Christmas shopping season. I think the name comes from that usally after this period of shopping starts, the Store is back in the black (making money) where the rest of the year they are breaking even or losing a little bit.

I work at Target Part Time and on a good weekend day we can make like 120-135K, this past Friday we made 400K!
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

The second reason why "Black Friday" is such a huge shopping day is because everyone has the day off and many are together with family. So a parents can head out to shop while grandparents, brothers, etc watch the kids. It didn't take long for the big companies to realize that it was a big shopping day so they started having "super Friday" sales to get peope in their stores.

The day after Thanksgiving has been a huge shopping day since I was a kid, and that was A LONG TIME before they started calling it "Black Friday".

Depends on where you live. Out east, it's been Black Friday for a long time.
