As the fob's start to come in , just some FYI's:

I have sent them in plain packaging and they are coated in oil to prevent corrosion during transit. You will want to wipe them.

I have not heat treated them due to time/costs involved, but this means they are easily polished if you like to have a better shine on them.

Under normal circumstances they should not corrode, normal abrassion on a key chain will keep them clean.

They are unfinished - feel free to polish/paint/clear coat etc.
Painting with a 'MURC blue' and then sanding the outside to leave the 'MURC' portion in blue would be a nice effect.
If you do anything interesting I'd like to see it posted here

Please feel free to contribute again next year- it you don't I may have to come up with some other trinket.

well, normally this would be sent out to a heat treating company, but as the process would discolour the steel, the fobs would need to be reground ( on a surface grinder) or polished to bring back the steel luster -something I just didn't have time to do.

Heat treatin O1 requires heating the steel to 1400 degrees (until it's red hot and no longer magnetic) and then quencing (cooling) in oil. At this point it would be very hard and brittle. You then temper it at about 350 degrees for 1 hour to give it it's toughness.
Since you wouldn't actually be using this as a tool, tempering would no really be required.

Are these temperatures Centigrade? (I guess yes)

Is a special oil needed for quenching? or is motor oil ok?

                            Temperatures are in farenheit.

Motor oil is fine, it's basically a cooling medium - O1 likes to be cooled quickly for hardening.
