  • My next modeling project....

will be a 1/17th White Knight and SpaceShipOne.

White Knight will be an R/C ducted-fan powered model with a modded Estes SpaceShipOne 13" model rocket.

WK will take off then on command drop the SS1, which will be powered by an Estes B6-C6 Estes rocket motor.

The mods will include replacing Estes SS1 parachute landing system with a functional "shuttlecock" wing and basic R/C controls.

Now I just have to wait for January to get the SS1 kit....

who puts the kit out, or are you scratchbuilding it?

Estes, the people who make the model rocket kits/engines, will be coming out with a flying SS1 kit in January. Mines on pre-order.

The White Knight will be scratch-built, but plans won't be finalized until I get the SS1 so the fit will be right. I'm already working on the electronics; drop release, electric rocket fusing for the SS1 etc.

You know, when I first read the title, I thought... "Doc in a bikini???".

Then I remembered Doc also did miniature/scaled modelling...

OK, so the first one will fly. Will the custom one too?

They always have in the past, including one or two that could launch model missiles using A type engines

The custom SS1 will, as noted, use a B or C engine and will be ignited electrically as the drop mechanism releases it.

My instincts tell me to use R/C flight controls, but one small part of me would love to set up a programmable system to work the servos and put it in a spiraling glide after the engine burns out.
